"When asked how he finds out the news, Charles Brady, of Riverdale, Oranmore, told Judge Mary Fahy that he reads newspapers"
    Good answer.

A man who told a TV licence inspector that he only used his television to watch movies, had a summons struck out against him at Galway District Court on Tuesday.

Hence why TV licence is being changed to a general charge for all IT products.

I think she may have got this one wrong... either that, or shoddy journalism.

So the solicitor bringing the case accepted the evidence that the tv had no channels for 3 yearsand asked that it be struck out.
So is it a good defence now to state that you have no channels. I thought the wording was very specific in that if you had an appliance capable of receiving a signal you needed a licence.

    @mickdw

Isn't the analogue signal dead? Maybe the TV wasn't actually capable of recieving a broadcast without Freeview etc.

Aye a fat lot of good it will do him anyway, with it being changed to a broadcasting charge.

He could just not answer the door to the license inspector next time?

    Why bring the case then?

In the UK, when TV licence inspectors call, the residents can remove his or right to enter the property.

I cant remember the last time I actually watched the TV to watch scheduled programming. You can watch a tv show online within in 40mins with no ads, compared to an hour watching it on the tv

You can hardly call RTE news, actual news. If they dont have a reporter or someone they can skype to give the irish view point and nothing but the irish view point. The story is cut from the news. Where as papers like the irish times tend not to be biased when reporting.

The License inspector doesnt have a right to enter your property here.

Think he's talking about the thing that means that the postman or someone knocking on your door isnt trespassing. Supposedly in the UK if you tell the tv licence people that they are not allowed on your property then you can claim they were trespassing by knocking on your door.

You are not obliged to comply with the inspectors if they do call. The first mistake people make is giving their name, if they dont have this then they can't issue a fine. If they do catch me off guard which has happened the odd time, i'll just tell them no, no, no and no. Then bid them a good evening and close the door. Works every time.

    What if it's rented accommodation?

They have absolutely no powers what so ever, its the same as you or me going to someones door and asking their name !! You'd get off lightly with a "no" and the door being closed.

I'm fully compliant regarding the TV licence fee/tax, however when on the one occasion many moons ago an inspector called and asked to inspect my house, I told him straight, using these words, calmly with a hint of pleasantry; "sorry no, fcuk off and come back with a warrant if it means that much to you". He never did.

Yes I may have boundary issues, but what the hell, we're invaded on a near daily basis on our phones and doorbells and emails by shills and pimps for commercial and government agencies and I say it's time to cry "NO. Fcuk that". Or at least to cry "eh why..?" If you're not adding value to my life or that of our wider society, then fcuk right off or I'll release the fcukin dogs on ya. "But, but I only work for them, it's not my fault" etc. Yea "I was just following orders" doesn't really cut it anymore luv. /rant

Lads, Miriam needs the half million so she does, Mooney isn't going to say byyyyyyyyyyeee for under 200k, Tubridy could be poached by the BBC if we don't pay him a pretty penny.

Just pay up, stop being tight, we need a bloated RTE to read us government press releases at 6 every evening, how else would we know how to think about the way things are.

I filled out some form, confirmed I don't have a TV and all the reminders have stopped. That was about 3 years ago. I reckon they can't be arsed forcing the issue anymore with the broadcasting charge coming in.
