Im no fan of his but you have to give cudos to Simon Cowell with how his departure from American TV was handled yesterday.

At round 7pm our time stories started filtering through that he's leaving X Factor USA to focus on his new baby with his missus (stop sniggering! ;) ) and to return to X Factor UK. Cue many online asking "who will replace him on X Factor USA?"

Then two hours later this story comes out that the American version of the show is cancelled (due to his departure for home) and his very lucrative deal with Fox is over. When the truth of it was the show had slipped to just 6 million viewers in the States, absolutely dire for its timeslot.

Another example; Political; In the United States, public affairs dealing with U.S. military contacts during the beginning of the War in Iraq used a spin tactic. Many parts of U.S. military wanted to hire public relations firms to send out made up or misleading information to get a rise in the public approval of the war.

And a final political example was the recent headline (and AH thread title) that screamed; "The US unemployment rate is plummeting (now 6.6%!)" when in fact, on closer inspection, the facts came out that "the participation rate in the labor force is at its lowest since 1978. A shocking 62.8%. For example 347,000 people left the labor force in the month of december alone (if you give up looking for work you are not counted in the Unemployment statistics)"

    PR spin at its best/worst.

So be it celebs, politics or whatever, what's the best PR Spin Doctoring you've ever seen?

The US jobs report was pretty roundly seen as bad news. Hardly a good example of spin

West Germany's Bild newspaper printed a false account of how the East German leader Erich Honecker had died. When he issued a statement denying the story, they lead with - not, "Sorry, we were wrong..." but this, from memory:

HONNECKER ALIVE - AND READS BILD.

That the property tax was actually destined for local councils not ze Germans.

Or is that just an outright lie?

Its a great example of spin.

The headline screamed something very different story to the truth within. To anyone who was just giving AH, Reddit or whatever a quick scroll that day (as many do) they'd have thought that the States had recovered phenomenally well

Once I was our drinking all night, by the time I was getting home, the bakeries were open, I walzed into the bakery by the gaff, drunk n starving I bought one of everything and went home to face the music.

Walked in the house laden down with pastries, baguettes etc

Just as I walk in the front door, the wife comes out all sleepy headed still, the kids wake up.

Quick as a flash, I was like
" couldn't sleep, popped out to get us all breakfast, put the kettle on, I'm just gonna shower"

    Got away with it too

    Simon ain't all that

Wait you mean it was spin by whoever started the thread? I haven't heard any news outlet even try to present the january report as good news. How on earth can that be spin?

edit: the quote from the whitehouse
Today’s report is another reminder of both the progress that has been made and the challenges that remain. Businesses have now added 8.5m jobs over the last 47 months and the unemployment rate ticked down to its lowest level in more than five years. But the economy is still healing from the Great Recession and steps are still needed to expand economic opportunity.”

That's a halfhearted attempt to put a positive slant on things by taking at best. Not an example of some genius spin doctoring.

    "Not another cent!"

Pretty spinny right there. Go FG/Labour.
