Head gasket is gone in my wife's car and it's not worth fixing. My mechanic has found a used engine in a breakers 100 miles away but it's up to me to get it to him. What is the best way to get it moved? Breaker can't deliver and has suggested I travel to collect but I can't take time off work at the moment. Tks.

Why do you and/or your mechanic think you need to get the engine changed?

A head gasket is a relatively straightforward job that any even half decent mechanic should be able to do.

Also you haven't given us enough information for appropriate advice.

What car? What engine (size and fuel type)? What mileage?

Tks, car overheated and significant damage was done to the engine, it's not just the head gasket, the engine is ruined. My mechanic advised that he can fix it but I'd be better off getting a used one. It's a fiesta, I don't see how that matters, I know what needs to be done mechanically and have found a used engine. The only question was how would I collect it and move it 100 miles. Can't see a normal courier picking it up.

Try ace express freight. I've used them many times in the past for similar jobs.

They'll pickup a loaded palley from anywhere in Ireland and deliver same for about 50 quid next day. You just need to get the breaker to load it onto the pallet for you and pay him by cc presumably.

Ace express will handle the truck loading and unloading

Thanks, that's exactly what I'm looking for.

Engines consist of two parts mate, block most of the time cast iron, head is softer, usually aluminium or other lighter material. Due to overheat the head that twists and warps, even if driven for a prolonged period of time. Of course after a certain amount of time and in extreme cases it can cause serious oil starvation and feck the block but most of the time a full head job is whats needed.

Even said that sometimes, rarely blocks warp or more like de-shape and from factory they cannot be skimmed, and or, needs custom head gasket etc to keep compression good.

You`d be still better off getting a recon head or a scrapped one, even getting transported is easier/cheaper.

Thanks, cylinders are also warped and there are other problems as well, coolant leaked due to a faulty hose. I have a very competent mechanic who has never put me wrong before and a new engine was his recommendation upon inspecting the car. He has nothing to gain really from recommending a new engine as he is not selling it to me. He did offer to fix it be it is beyond economic repair in his opinion.

Its a fiesta, probably a zetec in which case it has an alloy block too. If it got very hot then chances are the block is warped also, and rings would be fried. This would lead to the engine using a lot of oil in the future.
