I`m thinking of finishing the Weanlens myself but to do so I need to get the ration in bulk for this to make some bit of profit (if it is possible)
i`m talking about 40 Weanlens so feeding indoors from mid Oct to March. What size Silo would I need and roughly what cost are they. Also how much cheaper is it to buy the ration and what set up do you need to take delivery from the supplier?
Also for a 300kg Weanlen in October is it possible to have him factory fit by July???

It depends on what your local merchant delivers, most round here have a min delivery of 3 ton which could be up to 3.5 so would need a 3.5-4 ton silo. The other option would be to get it in half ton bags and bucket it out to them as you need it each day. Most mercharst will sell it to you in the big bags for the same cost as the lorry load but you need to be able to drive down yourself to pick it up.

Saving of €40/ton by buying in bulk over bags.
We bought a 6ton bin off of crowley for €2270 with the offset chute.
The increase in size from 4ton to 6ton cost very little extra.
So will need to buy 55ton to get the pay back. Prob take us 5yrs.

Bins very convenient way of handling ration.
Ration is cheaper again if it is tipped but you need more handling facilities and equipment and not appropriate for this scale unless you already have the facilities.

Ration does go stale... Some1 will prob correct me but 12wks would be shelf life?

Very possible to have them factory fit by July if your prepared to fed them!

Assuming you feed 2kgs per day oct-February to 40 weanlings you will need near 10 ton.
Say another 5kg per day for 50 days to get them factory fit will be another 10 ton.

For budgeting purposes use €400/ton for cost of ration.
So will cost you 8k per batch of 40 or €200 per head.

    Fag packet figures!

I Know I would be very happy if I could start that light and get away with that little meal
I would be starting 50 kgs heavier and using double the meal for a little longer period

    Too answer your question
I have 8 tonne silo it holds about 6 tonne at peak fill every week merchant has no prob with that he claims lorry passing anyway
in the last 6-8 week's your talking half tone a day so work from there
I am seriously thinking of shed for tipping atm
    That's when you start saving

€10 a ton isnt going to make or break you, if anything you are more conscious of the amount your feeding instead of taking bucket fulls out of a shed. Scaling up costs allot of money with a very slow payback period

    Some good info their lads.
Anyone know the cost of the silo/grain bin and who supplies them.
Ive seen dairy setups with some type of a shoot coming out of them, is that some type of automatic system???

We have a bin for the dairy cows.

But for the beef cattle we blow the meal into an old calf house thats plastered and dry.

Lorry just backs up to the door and puts in the pipe and ties it out of the rafters with a rope and blows it in.

    Very true too
We did similar for a good few years
Good way to try finishing out.

That said delighted to have the bin now. Saves a lot of back ache getting the meal off the floor and into a container

Well Spirofeed in mallow, co. cork supply bins... They do good bins.. We have 2 of them... Very happy with em...

Then you have Crowleys, also in cork.... Don't know what there like but don't hear any bad reports bout em...

And you have v-mac silos in Monaghan... Noel kiely is a sales rep for them... Don't know anything bout there bins either but haven't heard bad reports...

There maybe others at em but I haven't heard of them...

    Hope this helps...
