    Hi guys,

Just wanted to share my experience with Magnet, as some of you will maybe join them or maybe you got the same experience as me..

I am now living in an apartment where there is no UPC (unfortunately for myself), so I have subscribed your service and fortunately the length is 30 days because I wouldn’t be able to keep this internet connection more than one month.

In fact, I have subscribed this contract one week ago and I’m already switching to another ISP and I will explain you why..

    1. My first bill.

100€ VAT included. Seriously ? For what? Is it their way to welcome new customers ? 7€ for the shipping of a ****ty modem where we can’t even have access to the administration interface (Thanks boards.ie for the password).
45€ for the installation service where the technician didn’t respect his appointment 3 times and where I ordered my internet connection 1 month ago? First Joke.

    2. Speed.

I will now quote their website.

“The fastest broadband in the country with your TV and phone included"

    “Ridiculously fast”

“Superfast fibre speeds gives you seamless web browsing, lightning fast downloads and instantaneous online experience. You’ll never look back…”

Let me summarize all of those quotes : A LIE.

First of all, I checked my modem and my synchronisation speed with the DSLAM is at 46Mbps. Fair enough, it’s not around 70 but I'll accept, still better than an ADSL connection and we are all aware that it depends of your distance from the cabinet.

Now let’s try different protocols like FTP, HTTP and so on..

FTP speed : MAXIMUM 100kb/s. OK fair enough maybe its my ftp site today who has an issue, let’s try with another one and another one and another one SAME ISSUE.

Let’s call someone who has Magnet as well just to check if it’s different, the answer is NO.

So now, let’s ask the support because we are 2 in this situation which is clearly a proof of a protocol restriction. They will tell you that there is no restrictions.

HTTP speed : So now let’s try an HTTP test, still on my own server which is located in London with a 1Gb/s speed connection.

Same issue, speed is very slow I will never go more than 1Mbps/s.

Moreover, the speed won’t be stable at all we will start by a pic of 700kb/s and it will go down and down and down…

Torrent speed : Once I got 2Mb/s, what a speed for an 46 Mbps connection isn't it ?

And now to conclude, since yesterday I have probably lines issue as my modem is dropping the connection every single min. I won’t blame them for this anyway, as they can’t probably control the weather in Ireland.

So this is my experience with them. I have made some test with different customers with Magnet as well and it's the same.

    Bye Magnet.

Still on Magnet here too, Northern Cross, their TV service is just terriable. I can't bare it anymore... stuff never records or the timing f**ks up and you miss the start or end. Change the volume? Yea good luck getting the slider off the screen again.

The broadband we don't fine too bad, it has it moments but for the most part it's good. That router they supply is the worst piece of technology every supplied by an ISP. Whats more is everyone had one and because they're so dumbtech they all interfered with eachother!

UPC finished the install in our complex so we're moving next month to Horizon. They manage to do this over the exisiting eithernet by the way so no coax runs or drilling.

Magnet want a cancellation fee - yea, good luck with that.

I thought there was no contract with magnet?

To be fair I find their BB good enough compared to pre fiber any would be better.

Only issue was the 1st bill got installed in September but they never went to my bank till the DEC 15th took 3 months and the install and postage 180 euro

I'm actually very happy with Magnet. I was with UPC before but very happy that I left there. UPC doesn't acknowledge that there is a problem and therefore doesn't do anything to fix it.

With Magnet I have my own router (I agree that their router is terrible, especially the wifi part) and they are more than happy enough to provide you with the passwords and settings you need to set it up. The beauty of setting up your own router is that with QoS you can make internet feel much faster even though the whole household is online by setting the rules correctly.

The company seems quite small which is heavily in their favour, if you call the customer service you actually get to speak to engineers who know their stuff instead of a student reading a script.

Just keep in mind that their services will always be limited to what Eircom is doing, since they are using the existing Eircom lines (as do Vodafone etc.)

Have no experience with TV though.

Care to share the settings needed to use your own router? They refuse to give me the settings, and more on here have also failed.

Sure, but they are different for each customer obviously. So they are kind of useless unless you know your password.

    ISP - PPPoE/LLC
    VPI - 8
    VCI - 35

    Login - *accountnumber*@magnet.ie
    Password - speaks for itself
    Service name - empty
    Connection mode - Always On

    IP address - Dynamic
    DNS - Dynamic

    Hope that helps
