    Hello,

I went for a job interview in Cork 2 weeks ago. I got the job offer Monday, and have to send back my contract, signed by the 11/02/2014.

I am really excited as this is my dream job.

I think the job role is permanent, however i seen the below in the contract and I am a bit confused.

It says that "the job role for the first six months will be on a probation period, and during this time my performance will be monitored/recorded"

I didnt do that well in the leaving cert,( failed 2 higher level papers- due to sickness and leaving exam early, still managed to get over 300 points though) a couple of years later i attended university, where i managed to do excellent in my degree, and have achieved excellent working experience afterwards.

I suppose the question i am trying to ask is 1) does leaving cert results matter, even if you have attained a really high grade degree in university? and have excellent work experience?

    2) does probation period not really matter, if you are a hard worker and are getting on well in the work place??

    * They never asked about LC points in interview, but on the job advertisement they said ' Leaving Certificate and relevant degree' was necessary

    Sound

If you have a Uni degree your LC is something no one will care about and probation period always matter in the sense they can let you go easier but the same is very true for your first year so I'd not be overly concerned about it.

Yeah dont worry about it. I never heard of anyone not making it past probation.

I would say that depending on the company you may not get all the usual benefits until after 6 months.

A probation period is standard in 99.9% of jobs. It is as much a period for you to assess the company as it is an opportunity for them to assess you. Unlike a previous poster I have known several people not pass probation or have it extended. In order to avoid this do a good job, be conscientious, willing to learn, show initiative and enthusiastic. You are not expected to know everything or learn at an unrealistic pace, but you will be expected to show your capacity to develop in the role and your desire to learn the role to a high standard as quickly as possible.

    Thanks for the responses.

In the contract it also says that ' they will do background checks, and if they are not happy with results, they will terminate contract'

Can anyone explain what kind of background checks they are on about? These were probably in my previous contracts aswel, but for once i have sat down and read one lol

    Thanks v much.

Possibly police or security check and reference checks. If something comes up which would be an issue for the type of job you are doing them on the basis of that you could be sacked. Unless you have a criminal record or would be likely to get a bad reference from as part employer you would have nothing to worry about.

    .

I have seen loads of people fail to get through probation periods. Kind of easy to tell who won't make it. I didn't make it through one myself but that was because after I joined I was in hospital for 2 months so they just said they needed to hire somebody.

OP I wouldn't worry about it. Pretty standard and in our legal system. If they extend your probation period go look for another job

    Very good point here.
In my last job I had 2 months notice period but during probation it was a weeks notice, either way. I saw several professional people leave after a few weeks/months. Some would openly say the job wasn't what they thought or whatever but it gives them a quick out. And if a nutjob joins the company can get them out easily!
