Patrick McCarthy Hanshi, Galway, Ireland 25th to 29th of June 2014

One of only a very few foreign Japan-accredited Hanshi-level 9th Dan instructors of traditional karate, Patrick McCarthy's studied the fighting arts since childhood.

His groundbreaking research helped launch the kata-bunkai trend during the late 1980’s, and made him one of the most sought after seminar instructors anywhere in the world.

Originally from Canada, he enjoyed a successful competitive career winning numerous municipal, provincial, and national tournaments along with 2 North American championships and a World title.

He also wrestled, fought as a kick-boxer and was amidst the first-generation of foreign submission fighters in Japan and worked closely with Takada Nobuhiko [owner of Pride].

His early Japanese-to-English translations allowed us to better understand the important historical works of pioneers like Bushi Matsumura, Itosu Ankoh, Miyagi Chojun, Mabuni Kenwa, Motobu Choki, Funakoshi Gichin and the once secret manual, BUBISHI [The Bible of Karate] etc.

As an innovator he pioneered the world’s very first instructor’s undergraduate program in 1995 in Brisbane, Australia. Which is now available as a distance education programme.

His own publications include, "Classical Kata of Okinawan Karate," "Okinawan's Greatest Masters," "My Karate," "Tanpenshu," and the "Ancient Martial arts of Okinawa (in 2 volumes)."

Currently, McCarthy Hanshi oversees the IRKRS, which has a standing membership in twenty-five countries; and travels the world teaching his Master-Class Kata Seminars.

The themes of his 2014 camp will be the functional application practices of Kata, and its 2-person drills, which will be directly and immediately transferrable to any style.

Additionally, Hanshi will also focus on stand-up, clinch-work and ground 'n pound... all from a "traditional basis" as it pertains to traditional karate.
