Documentary on the only person ever to escape the North Korean prison camps and live to tell about it.

He is only 32, so obviously it is still going on , 200,000 estimated people in camps up there.

There are interviews with North Korean camp officers etc.....

"It doesn't take much to be arrested in North Korea, you're arrested if you name the leaders Kim-Jong-Un without using the address 'Tongji' (comrade)" . That will land you in camp ! - Commader of Camp 22

"People who use a piece of newspaper that contains images of the leader for rolling tobacco, they go to camp ! "

Deffo worth a watch to see what is going on up there ! I've never seen anything like it.....

    watching it now...it's awful..
They were so brainwashed and conformist...he reported his mother and brother after overhearing them talking, leading to them both being killed :(

You'd do well to watch it in one day.
I'm a broken man here halfway through...... gonna have to take a break.
No film or documentary has had such an emotional toll on me in a long time...

Basically the guy you see in the screenshot escaped from this Camp, it hasn't got to the details of exactly how he did it yet.
He talks about life inside the camp.
There are also interviews with 2 previous prison officers.
They have no qualms in stating they routinely torture prisoners etc.
The guy told on his mother and brother for potentially plotting to escape...he didn't know any better. As a result..he was taken to the prison section...strung up in the air with his back to the ground, and they lit a fire under him.

The guards also tell how sometimes they get some inmates pregnant, and one case where a guard strung a pregnant woman up by a tree, and whipped her to death.

He explains about how they eat the same meal...everyday...365 days a year, and meager rations at that.
The reason why I wanted to escape wasn't freedom, I wasn't thinking about freedom. Even if I was shot for trying to escape, all I wanted was to eat a piece of chicken....to eat rice until I was full

He explains the 5 camp rules..
HE RULES OF CAMP LIFE AS SHIN REMEMBERS THEM:
    1. YOU MAY NOT FLEE.
. Anyone who attempts to flee will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who sees an escape plan or does not report it will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who sees someone fleeing must report it to National Security Authority teachers.

    2. MORE THAN THREE PERSONS
    ARE NOT PERMITTED TO
    ASSEMBLE.
. Anyone who enters another zone without the permission of a National Security Authority teacher will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who enters the village of the National Security Authority and destroys equipment will be shot immediately.
. Excepting the number of persons determined by the National Security Authority teacher, people may not assemble.
. People may not assemble outside of work without permission.
. At night, no more than three people may walk together without permission of a National Security Authority teacher.
. No more than three people may converse with one another outside of working relationships.

    3. YOU MAY NOT STEAL.
. Anyone who steals any sort of weapon or is in possession of a weapon will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who does not report or conspires with someone who has stolen or is in possession of weapons will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who steals or hides any type of food in the labor camp will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who intentionally damages or steals machines, equipment, or material will be shot immediately.

    4. YOU MUST COMPLETELY OBEY
    OFFICERS OF THE NATIONAL
    SECURITY AUTHORITY.
. Anyone who harbors discontent or does violence against a National Security Authority teacher will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who acts insincerely or disobeys orders from a National Security Authority teacher will be shot immediately.
. National Security Authority teachers may not be contradicted nor defied.
. When encountering a National Security Authority teacher you must politely greet him.

    5. IF YOU SEE A PERSON FROM OUTSIDE OR SOMEONE SUSPICIOUS YOU MUST REPORT IT IMMEDIATELY.
. Anyone who hides or protects someone from outside will be shot immediately.
. Anyone who possesses or hides an item from outside, is complicit with or does not report such will be shot immediately.
. The possession or hiding of all sorts of items from outside is
    prohibited.

I don't know why I've never heard of this guy, his story or the documentary.
You would think with all the news and interest people have in North Korea...the secrecy etc......that this would be more in the spotlight of the general public.

It's strange that a modern day place, equivalent to the concentration camps of WW2 is still running, but none of us seem to realise the degree to which it's happening.

I'll watch the 2nd half later....it's a bit much to take in at times.
