Not mad cheap but go for it, I threw a SSD into a 486 DX not so long ago (with IDE adaptor) and now I can play Crysis on it in HD @ 100 FPS

You should be able to overclock that 486 and squeeze a few more FPS out of crysis. It's a PITA installing Crysis through floppies though

It's a good drive from a good brand. One of the cheapest per GB at the moment. It's not top of the range for speeds, but it's not far off either. Cheaper than a lot of slower drives.

The main benefit of SSDs is the response times, which allows you to open many programs near instantly and have very fast boot times.

Nice. This joke really brings a new life to the old stuff. I stuck mine SSD into 10 years old mouse (using an genuine Dell PS2/SATA3 adaptor bought on eBay for 99 cents) and guess what? This bloody animal just killed my cat! :eek:

Yea it be a bit mad, get the smaller one, and install it with a DVD to HD drive bay adaptor, and get 2 drives! One for games and one for os!

This is actually cheaper direct from Crucial. £57.98 with £10 off code: CR10JFD bringing it to £45.98. Select Ireland for country and you still get free shipping but the vat gets £1.15 added to it bringing it to £47.13.

Installed the larger capacity of this same product on my Macbook Pro a few months ago. The immediate speed difference was phenomenal (it boots up in just 13 seconds!) Fantastic buy. Totally happy.

I did a fresh install of Windows instead.

Usually it's better to do a fresh install than to transfer over any existing flaws in your current install.

+1 I would advise against cloning. Reinstall is your only man. The actual install is very quick anyway.

It is better to do fresh installation even if you replace hdd with hdd. But it will work fine if cloned too - recently I clone few PCs into ssd (not mine) and found no issues about it.

Umm that article actually says its not a defrag but a trim. Which would be ok.

But....this article says theres a bug and it does appear to do a defrag.

Just checked and it seems to be fixed at least on fully updated 8.1 pro now just doing trim commands I had it running old style defrag when I installed in 2012. Few screenshots on the above thread to show the same.

The article I linked to was updated Feb 2014 the others seem to be from 2012 when Windows 8 was just released. It (Feb 2014) suggest the problem still exists, but isn't reported in the GUI. Only by testing over time, will be it apparent.

Well when I click optimise now its done in less than a second it used to do the whole 7 passes of consolidating files :rolleyes: before I disabled it.

You don't really need one, is not like a spindle disk where vibration is a big issue, mine are stuck in with tape.

I had just renabled it after reading the thread about trim and it seems to be working fine.

Flubit just offered the 240gb for £81.77 so around the round €100 (I would be using parcel motel anyway)
