Upgrading pc to play newer games

    Hey guys,

I've been putting off upgrading my PC for awhile now, until yesterday when I purchased Arma 3 only to find that it runs on 20 fps minimum settings on single player..

    Current specs:

Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 550 Ti 1Gb
    Pentium Dual-core E5400 2.70GHz
    4GB 1333MHz ram
OCZ Technology 500W CoreXStream Series Power Supply
    320GB Hard Drive
    1366x768 resolution monitor

Currently, I plan on only upgrading the motherboard, CPU, Ram and case for better cooling due to funds. I'll then upgrade the hard drive, graphics card and power supply some time in the future.

    Upgrades I had in mind:

    Aerocool Xpredator X1 Midi-Tower €46
    ASRock 980DE3/U3S3, AM3+, ATX €48.30
    AMD FX-8320 €134
    RipJaws 8gb 1600MHz €70

I'd like to hear your opinion on the upgrade, perhaps suggest any changes and give information on how it will run with newer games even with the graphics card not being the newest (Budget €300)

    Thanks,

    Eric

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Yes, graphics card, hard drive, power supply

    5. Do you need a monitor? No

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No new peripherals

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes

    8. How can you pay? Debit card

    9. When are you purchasing? In about 1 month

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? No help needed

Come back in a month. No point speculating.
Prices and stock will have changed.

For arma personally think Intel the way to go. But will add approximately 50.

Thanks for the reply. I know prices will change but I want to get an idea of what would be best to purchase around that price mark, I don't necessarily have to purchase from a certain shop. That way I can look out for deals on hardware in the coming weeks and perhaps buy each item piece by piece, depending on shipping price of course :). Yeah Intel seems to be quite more expensive. An i5 3570k for example, would cost me an extra 60-70

I would have suggest an I5 non k in the 150 range. And a haswell for future proofing.

Ok well let's start with the case any.reason you choose this? And price of it.

The main reason I chose that case was for dust filters, fan controllers and ventilation, costs €46. But certainly not limited to that case. Fan controllers not essential.

My current case doesn't have much ventilation and I get overheating issues while playing games if I don't up the fan RPM with speedfan

Anyone else got an opinion on the hardware I picked out or if I should change something around?

I looked up the areocool cases. They don't seem too good at cooling considering their name. Corsair 200 or 300r. You have used tje discount site?

What are you planning on doing in Arma? If you're going to play Wasteland Mod then it's going to struggle, the online optimization is awful but if you're going to be playing single player it should run reasonably well.

Thanks for the advice! I haven't used the discount site but I was checking prices on this website:

they've got a good selection also

Just get an idea of how much you want to spend. And what exact type of case you want. The corsair ones are reliable good to build with. Nice cooling. Just don't look fancy.

I was hoping to mainly play Wasteland and Altis life. Yeah the optimization for Arma 3 online mods isn't so good.. Although I was told Arma 3 was more optimized than Arma 2, but wasn't the case for me. Normally I can play Takistan Wasteland on Arma 2, medium settings 25+ fps. I get 7-11 on minimum for Arma 3 wasteland.

Maybe I might be better getting an intel CPU for the likes of Arma and other games, since most videos/streams I watch, people always got Intel. AMD would save me quite a bit of money and would benefit me for multitasking.

Are you playing wasteland on altis or.straits? I prefer straits. As it is better performance more players too. Arma 3 is not better optimised than arma 2, don't care what they say.

AMD is a good CPU the 6300 would do for gaming. I just prefer Intel myself. But if budget comes down to better CPU or Gpu the extra goes to Gpu.

I tried both Altis and Straitis, both performed bad unfortunately :( I hope they optimize the game more in the future. Would a 8320 be better than a 6300 for gaming? When the times comes where I pick up a graphics card, I might go for a 7870.

The Corsair 200R seems like a good choice, or a Sharkoon REX8.

    How would a FX-8320, or even a 8350 and 7870 compare to an i5-3570k and gtx 660?

It will most times come down to graphics cards. The 7870 is a better card. And will gain more frames.

If you are getting an I5 go with haswell not ivy. The haswell socket 1150 will be used on the future broadwell CPU. So if in the future you wanted to upgrade will only mean a new CPU.
