Ryan Tubs has announced this morning that Larry Gogan is moving to a Sunday show on 2fm. The funny thing is Larry was approached by another station quite recently but unlike pat Kenny he wasn't brave enough to leave RTE

As a regular listener to the Golden Hour, it'll be interesting to hear Larry in the new slot. Can he start playing 'oldies' again, and not songs from three yeras ago.

Also interesting to hear if he'll be on before or after John Clarke, or - gulp - replacing him.

I love Gogan, and he's a radio legend, wasted on 2fm, no matter what the format is. As for John Clarke, he DEFINITELY doesn't belong there.

    Edit: YIKES! Damn predictive text.

Whoops. Thank you. Boy, do I feel silly.

    Bloody SwiftKey!

He sounds a tad annoyed on his show today.

Why can't Gogan be moved to RTE Gold? It's a 24-hour oldies station and he can present for as long as he wants.

Larry Gogan should be switched over to Radio 1 and take over from Ronan Collins.

And Ronan Collins can do anything he likes as long as it doesn't involve a microphone

Must be to save on printing costs.

As in Larry's scripts. Lovely guy, but I can picture him pulling out a notebook in the RTE canteen so he can order his lunch without having to think on his feet and utter a spontaneous sentence.

The last thing he said as he signed off before 2pm was "I'm off tomorrow, but I'll be back on the radio on Monday".... or words to that effect. So has he actually been cut or has poor Larry forgotten he won't be needed on Monday?

If it's on the page, he'll read it. Larry is only there so long, because he's been there so long.

The new schedule doesn't actually start next Monday.

How could ya not love Larry. I'm sure he'd love to tell people they were as thick as poo, but he doesn't, just in his amused voice 'the questions didn't suit ya'

He helped make DJing in Ireland a proper profession not just talk radio, he's been around so long and he inspired many a DJ to take to the airwaves. He deserves his place in Irish radio, not too sure he'll be thrilled with the weekends, but maybe another job offer will come along. I hope it does.

The treatment of Larry by 2fm in recent months has been nothing short of scandalous. Larry is a radio legend and will be remembered in radio far more than Dan Healy ever will. By allowing the media to openly print stories saying a pensioner was to be axed and not say or do anything to the contrary was bad itself, and must have affected Larry in some way, but then for Larry to find out 2nd hand he was to be axed. Jesus. He deserved more respect than that.

You are presuming Larry wasnt told he would be moved off weekdays, ages ago. Larry has been moved across the schedule repeatedly since 1979, he's well used to it and has been paid handsomely for the privilege. As regards the media printing stories, thats up to them. Clearly there will always be chinese whispers and a blank piece of paper never refused any ink. Larry the legend is lucky he hasnt been forcibly retired.

Claire Duignan moved Larry to the weekend a few years ago and he eventually returned back to weekday lunchtime...don't be surprised if the same thing happens down the line.

Time for Larry to pack in really

The Headline on thejournal's story says 'Larry Gogan: “The Golden Hour isn’t going anywhere”', which isn't factually correct but it does state he will be doing the same show, just at the Weekend (and longer).
2FM has confirmed today that Gogan has signed a new contract with the station and that he’ll now present a two hour show on Saturdays and Sundays which will incorporate the Just a Minute Quiz and The Golden Hour.

    http://thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/larry-gogan-weekends-2fm-1303206-Feb2014/

Is John Clarke staying? It would be a bit odd having two oldies shows in a row on a 'Youth' Station (except when they butcher the schedule for live Sport).

Didn't Dan Healy deny that Larry was being moved a few weeks ago ?

Id say John Clarke, Michael cahill and mark mccabe, who all have desk jobs will be taken off the air to make room for all the weekday djs getting weekend slots.

yes Larry was moved to Sat & Sun in around 2007 and stayed there for around 2 years. Then was moved back to weekdays...it actually happen again. Let's hope John Clarke's show stays..it's no harm at all!!

I hope a slot is found for him somewhere.

If i was in charge of RTE radio, I would put Larry and his golden hour on from 7-8PM on Radio 1, He would do alot better in the ratings than the program currently in that slot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,644 ✭✭✭cml387

Larry is only returning to his original slot on Saturdays.
That was his program "Saturday Spin" which I used to listen to...in 1966

Retire Larry, his time is past! In fact it was past about 10 years ago. There's no room for him when you look at the bottom line!

Head of 2fm, Dan Healy said: “The greatest of them all... over the last number of months, Larry and I have been talking about what he would like to do on 2fm and he felt that he could do a significant job for the station at the weekends. 2fm may be changing but Larry Gogan is constant. Weekends are as important as weekdays in radio and the reason I have chosen Larry to be the linchpin he is the best at what he does and always delivers. The greatest privilege for me in my working life is to have the opportunity to work with Larry Gogan.”

He's the greatest of them all.. so we're moving him to the weekends. Is there on end to the rubbish that comes out of that man's mouth?... He must have read that book, Chemical Ali's Guide To Public Relations..

    Larrys A Legend.

There appears to be a lot of green eyed ageism in this thread, Larry's a radio presenter, ie he talks for a living what has his age got to do with his ability to do his job?

This "legendary" status is constantly bandied about... Larry hasn't deviated from the same script (That was x, coming up we have y) for 30 years. All his links sound exactly the same, he rarely deviates from what's written in front of him barring the occasional awkward interaction with the just-a-minute callers. He doesn't offer any of his own personality at all! He's not going to change now, that's just his style and the way he is I suppose! This style does noticeably jar though with all the other shows and presenters all around him. It's like tuning into a completely different station when he's on.

Having said that, this can be a good thing as many other current presenters can't help but tell you all about their lives, their opinions on everything, blabbering about twitter this and facebook that... Larry just plays the tunes.

Its a light hearted music show, nobody should be expecting a load of nonsense and waffle.

As for him sounding different , even raising that as an issue when talking about a radio presenter says multitudes about the state of radio here , They should all sound unique if you ask me , but that's just my opinion.

    I disagree.

He keeps his links tight and to the point.
He interacts very well with the Quiz contestants
He knows more about music than most, but his programme is designed to be music intensive so he doesn't waffle on about his memories.

It's a welcome change to the usual standard of daytime radio on most stations

Heard Will Leahy say that Ruth & Paddy will still be on air when the new schedule kicks in, so unfortunately for the listeners it is looking good for them.

This has probably already been said but what a mess 2fm is lately, everytime i tune in there's someone new on replacing the replacement. And Nicky Byrne taking over colm Hayes' slot? Lord help us.

RTE are wasting his 60 years of musical knowledge by having him on 2fm. He should be on Radio 1 doing shows like Brian mattew and Tony Blackburn do at the bbc. Now that the 2fm golden hour plays "oldies" from 4 years ago, it should be presented by one of their young djs.

So to extrapolate from your 'reasoning' Pat Kenny should still be DJing on RTE,
Pete Murray should still be on Radio Luxembourg.

C'mon man how long do these lads have at the trough.

People retire at 65ish for a fohhking reason, to give others a chance.

What would happen if EVERYBODY hung around working into their 80s, jeez lad give us a break here.
