You may be aware there was a tube strike today in London that's set to continue tomorrow resulting in pand-e-f*ckin-monium for most commuters. This was obviously forecast and as such contingency plans were in place such as 100 additional bus services serving the city and tubes that are running (with limited access) later then usual (apparently) and starting earlier.

Naively, as I take the bus to work, I thought this strike wouldn't affect me much aside from extra traffic on the roads but oh ma days bruv, I was well wrong innit!

This morning on my way in the buses were extremely overcrowded despite the apparent additional services and the streets were full of worried looking commuters.

At one bus stop along my way, the driver politely told the pressing crowd that the bus was just too full to let anyone else on, and to please wait for another one. This wasn't good enough and absolute bedlam ensued.

One big f*t (sozzers but she was) woman stood in front of the doors and refused to move unless she was let on. There was literally no room to breath and people were pushing and shoving and shouting until finally, another fairly large woman lunges forward and pulls the hat off the original fat lady's head and screams' I work in a hospital and people need me to be there!!!'. The bus had been at a standstill because of f*atzo number one for at least 10 minutes at this stage and the whole bus was aggro!

It stuck with me all day. I know Ireland can be a bit a backward and we have less people and all that but jesus, I've never seen this type of carry- on on a bus in Dublin.

On my way home it was even worse. The poor bus driver ended up pulling over and saying everybody out now which meant we all had to walk home. I know the nightlink is what it is and certain buses in Dublin are full of scum but in London it's a different ballgame.

Not even sure what my point is here but today was a disaster for me travel-wise and it was unprecedented seeing as I take the bus. My usual one hour journey in total took me 3 hours, 2 fights and alot of wasted mid week drinking thyme:(

I want to go back to Dubbers!!!

The daily commuting was a big reason why i left london.all the tubes and busses are so claustrophobic and soul destroying.felt like a total waste of time trying to get around the place every day.

I feel more of a sense of real danger in London though then I do in Dublin. Today annoyed me because as much as people bitch about Dublin and Ireland being backward and so on, I always feel quite safe there and things like today don't happen often.

What I mean is, I'm from Dublin and have maybe seen one person thrown off a bus for being a d*ck but I'm less then a year in London and have seen people f*cked off buses countless times! How are we so different when we're right beside each other ffs (the islands not me and some junkie)

I want the Knightlink too. Sounds kinda cool and Enya-ey. King Arthurs bendi-bus. To get on, you have to be able to pull out your sword and slay the dragon. That might just be me though.

Weird but I actually felt much safer living in London (camden) than Dublin (ranelagh).

Dublin tenth size of London but still a terrible kip.

I feel much safer in London than parts of Dublin. That said, I much prefer Dublin as you can have the craic with people. I think the difference is due to population size.

This, exactly this. Dublin's services are no where near as convenient, but neither are they so horribly depressing.

Comparing London to Dublin is like comparing Dublin to Athlone.
For its size London's infrastructure is very good imo.

    Now, that said

OP is a weirdo. The tube is great, I get excited by the signs and the voices and the feeling of just being an ant in a tunnel among the throngs of people. The buses tell you what stop you're at and you can text every bus stop to find out when the next ones are coming if it doesn't have a display. The best way to get around Dubbers is on a bike for sure.

You can check when the next bus will arrive at your stop for Dublin bus too. I've found in to be reliable. Most busses tell you what stop you're at too.

Oh cool, I thought I saw a few displays when I was home recently yes. Do people still smoke on buses in Dublin? Every morning going to work there would be a fog of fag and hash smoke upstairs. Never seen anyone smoke on a bus in any other country!

Haven' been on a bus where someone is smoking in some time, and I get four of them most days.

The tube is a hateful, misreable experience at rush hour. I would find it strange if anyone felt that component to their workday was 'exciting'.

Rightly or wrongly, cycling around Dublin is very dangerous from a cyclist perspective.

Well you could look at the tube in a negative light if you like but then you'd only get yourself down, wouldn't you.

Cycling is not dangerous really. I cycled along the quays and into town every day for 7 years and never had any scrapes. As long as you stay away from vans and HGVs it's fine. I cycle here in London too and it's similar but it's like the worst parts of Dublin for cycling times 1000.

I don't know what you'd have to do to get thrown off a bus in Dublin. From threads I've seen here anything goes.

The difference in England seems to be they have procedures for dealing with problems. Someone acting the bollox on the bus, he gets dealt with and thrown off. Someone acting the bollox on an Irish bus, everyone looks the other way and tries to ignore it.

I would also wonder what car ownership per head is like in Dublin compared to London? Dublin seems very dependant on cars, which means public transport fiascos don't affect as many people. Road closures on the other hand have people sitting in cars for hours with no option to walk home.

Yeah no one in my office drives, that's about 200 people. It's just not an option. The traffic isn't bad either, not like the tailbacks I'd see every morning in Dublin on the Malahide and Howth roads. It's probably the worst traffic I've seen anywhere. Is that down to poor public transport?

That's the problem - public transport in Dublin is brutal so people have to rely on cars.
Because people use their cars, investment in public transport is sh1te.

But at least the fares have gone up to squeeze users more rather than dropping fares to encourage more people to use buses.
