Questionable to have dallaglio at 8, but at 6!?

Played plenty of rugby there. He became an out and out 8 as he got older but for his first 25-30 caps, including on the Lions tour of 1997 (where he was in the test team), he was a blindside.

he played a lot at 6. i thought parisse is a better 8, heaslip probably makes more yards, quinnell too was a better 8 imo...both were slightly bigger and carried very well...dallaglio was though a superb blindside, tremendous work rate and world cup winner.

Well I'm not saying hes a poor player obviously, class act, leader and player. But I think there were better blindsides imo.

I'd say most posters never saw the likes of Sella or Davies so here's my 6 Nations team:

    15 Robinson
    14 Clerc
    13 O'Driscoll
    12 Greenwood
    11 Williams
    10 Wilkinson
    9 Dawson
    1 Jenkins
    2 Wood
    3 Marconnet
    4 Johnson
    5 O'Connell
    6 Hill
    7 Dusautoir
    8 Dallaglio

Bench: Ibanez, Domingo, A Jones, AW Jones,
    Parisse, Phillips, Dominguez, Jauzion

I would have put Betsen, better than Hill for me. Rory underwood was class as well ... hard to make choices.

Edwards at 9? Excuse the ignorance but I dont know him. When was he around? I always rated Robert Jones from Wales late 80s early 90s. Seemed to be the one guy that could rattle Nick Farr-Jones.
Also I would have to go with WillieJohn over POC. Never saw him play but pretty much every kiwi I've spoken to from the older generation said he was the best ever. And the great Sir Colin says he was the hardest man he ever played against so I bow to their knowledge.

Tbh I think it's impossible to mix amateur era and professional era players in the same team. WJMB, undoubtedly a great of the game, probably wouldn't make it as a 2nd row today because he isn't tall enough. The eras are just too different to compare imo. The amateurs wouldn't have been nearly fit or strong as the pros, but obviously they worked full time and didn't have an army of staff dedicated to their physical conditioning and well-being, cutting edge medical access, etc.

Very true. He probably would have been an 8 or a 6 if he played in the modern era.

    Gareth Edwards - 1973 Baa Baa's try!

I liked Robert Jones too but in legend terms he'd be Gary Longwell and Gareth Edwards would be Willie John.

More than a little off-topic……..all fair points, but Willie John also penned possibly the most boring autobiography I've ever read - and I've read tonnes. There's not a cliche he didn't use, the style was similar to that used tongue-in-cheek by Steve Coogan in the ending to almost every chapter in the Alan Partridge's bio, i.e. "needless to say I had the last laugh" - except Wille John was serious. Most of it actually reads like one of those "What I did for my Summer Holidays" essays you had to write on your first week back in primary school in Sept. I bought it for 25c in Zavvi when they were closing in Dundrum. I was robbed.

Fair enough. He was before my time but many say he was the greatest player of all time. All subjective obviously, but even watching clips on Youtube you'll soon realise he was some player.

Barring Wilkinson, top class NH OH's have been very thin on the ground in the past 25 years. The likes of ROG and Stephen Jones? Ugggh. the various mercurial (read 'flakey') French , Gregor Townsend? Neil Jenkins could play there I suppose. But I can't remember seeing anyone other than Wilkinson that was considerably better than Rob Andrew.

On reflection I'd drop POC for Martin Johnson.

I was limiting it to guys I'd watched play. Jonathon Davies was pretty handy, but a bit too 'rugby leaguey' for me.

If you read the book you knew me, you'd know it's not! ;)

It's honestly awful. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he has some amazing stories and I've been in his company and found him quite entertaining. But he commits none of that to paper, just rolls off some incredibly bland stories one after the other. You'd have to wonder why is not telling the real/full stories, is it some kinda of omerta? It had the potential to be amazing but fell so flat on its face it's just awful. I know of only one other person who read it and they said pretty much the same thing about it.

Edit: I've an awful feeling BOD's book could rival it though for awfulness! And I say that as a BOD fan!

Only other hooker to come near Wood was Phillipe Dintrans, the great french hooker. He was the first hooker to throw the ball into the lineout and great around the field.
Wood was the best ever, speed, bravery, intelligence, leadership - no one compares.
