Teaching basic computing maths - bits & bytes.

I know nothing of the school curriculum apart from what I went through years ago, when computing was a short optional course in secondary school, but it appears that young adults still don't have a clue about basic computing numbers like bits, bytes, megabytes, etc. and what they represent.

So when I start to speak about something simple like the size of a disk or about a concept like 'memory,' they look at me like I must be from another planet.

I ask teachers: Am I just seeing the results of past teaching, and will this obvious shortcoming be fixed when present students leave school, or are they going to be ignorant of basic computing concepts too, leaving them in the dark about the fundamental mechanics of things they depend upon every day?
