Hey guys, during the milkrounds I actually received an offer for a graduate job in auditing with a big 4 company. The thing is I finish college in May and the contract doesnt start till October which is a long time and i'd like to get some experience working in the office i'll be joining and seeing what it'll be like. Im just wondering do accounting firms offer contracts to future graduate employees to do temporary work during the summer kind of like an internship? And also who would contact about this, would I contact the graduate recruitment team?

I haven't heard of it - there are internships but they are aimed at people who are still in college.

    Congratulations on your training contract.

My advice: You will be working long enough - enjoy your summer off.

This - a million times over.

The odds are that (other than the summer of your FAEs, when you'll be studying), this might well be the last time you have a long summer off.
Make the most of it - if you spend the summer slaving away I guarantee you'll regret it in 4/5 years time, when a summer off will seem like a lifetime away.

Also, it's very unlikely that a firm would want to take you in for the summer. They'd have to arrange training for you outside of scheduled time; and the summer is generally a quieter time for many departments so the need to have bodies to throw at a job isn't as pressing.

Your best bet would be an internship, but the trouble is the vast majority of places insist that you are in your penultimate year. It's common for people to lie about this and say they are doing a masters... but I would really not recommend it as its common for them to check. Have you considered going travelling? Head out to asia and put it on your credit card ;)

If you do go down the internship route, you can find a reasonable list of audit graduate employers here, but as you already have an offer I expect you have a pretty good handle on which companies fit your profile best
