Try unistalling the driver and reinstalling with the current one available from Synaptics.

Have you a USB mouse that you could use in the meantime?

Hve you tried downloading the relvevant driver from the HP webiste? (I know you've tried the latest one from Synaptics but if may not be fully compatible with your OS version)

Make sure to fully uninstall old driver first. The thing about that is you may be forced to use your keyboard to install the driver afterwards. Shouldn't be a problem if you save the install file to your desktop and use mose keys to navigate to file and enter to start the install procedure.
