    Hi,

I was given a car as present last April but don’t drive. I do plan to start driving in the next few weeks. I had the car ownership changed into my name. I just looked there and the tax is out of date since May last year.

I am wondering will I have to pay the backdated tax as I never declared the car off the road as I didn’t know I had to as I wasn’t driving it.

    Thanks

You will have to pay the tax from the first day of the month you transferred the car into your name. Check the logbook to see when it was transferred to you.

If the bill is very high there is a way to avoid paying this. Look around the Motors forum and you should find it.

If the car genuinely hasn't been on the road, from before the new system came in, there is a mechanism to declare this via a Notary Public. Search motortax.ie.

Bought a car in January date of sale on the tax book is January 24th. Car was declared off the road by previous owner. What date am I liable for the tax from? If the 24th of January is taken as the date am I expected to pay for all of January. I have no problem paying from February 1st but paying for January would be ridiculous.

Transfer the car to a friend or spouse, transfer back to you, hardly worth it though to add an extra owner to save a months tax.

This whole transfer of owners to a spouse etc... Does it really work?

You can transfer it to anyone, new owner is then responsible for tax from that month onwards, no back taxes. If the car is then sold back to the original owner they are then only liable for when the car becomes theirs.
