Would appreciate your help here. I know this is not a genealogical situation but I have to get a birth cert for a relative from the 1940's for their pension. Do I get it from the HSE site www.certificates.ie or can I pop into Lombard Street and which is the cheapest method. I'm more used to looking for archives so I'm lost on recent stuff. :o

You can go into Lombard St definitely. Not sure how much cheaper but I imagine you'll need the full legal birth cert, which costs €20. Certificates.ie has the same price but postage is extra. So it'll come down to which is more convenient for you. I haven't ordered from the website before because, like you, I'm mainly doing historical research. You don't need to give them the index references, as far as I can see.

Thanks Pinky. I'll be visiting GRO in the next week or so and will pop down to Lombard Street.
