Noel Curran has been reappointed RTÉ Director-General for a further 4 years to Feb 2018, to complete 7 years.
Appointment of RTÉ Director-General for a Further Four Years

Tues 4th February 2014: The Board of RTÉ today welcomed the Government's approval of the re-appointment of Noel Curran as Director-General for 4 years.

Tom Savage, Chairman of the RTÉ Board, said: “I would like to say how pleased I am personally that Noel Curran has agreed to continue for a further period of four years. The Board and I look forward to continuing to work with him. The organisation as a whole will benefit from a steady hand in these difficult economic times and the changes in this industry that lie ahead.”

The Director-General is appointed by the Board of RTÉ following a public competition. The Board recently requested Noel Curran to remain in the role for another four years. Under Section 89 of the Broadcasting Act, the consent of Government is necessary for RTÉ to appoint a Director General.

He was originally appointed Director General back in Nov 2010, replacing Cathal Goan in Feb 2011 - http://www.rte.ie/about/en/press-office/press-releases/2010/1109/292934-dgnoelcurran09112010/

The Director General is the most senior executive post in the RTÉ organisational structure. As well as being the organisation's Chief Executive Officer and Editor-in-Chief the Director General represents RTÉ both nationally and internationally. His salary for 2012 was €338,000 a year including pension and other benefits, up from €310,000 in 2011.

This follows on from Kevin Bakhurst's appointment as RTÉ's Deputy DG in early January - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057133047

It is surprising how the Minister/Government can reappoint someone so quick and also put someone on to the Board of the BAI just two days after a resignation but cannot make a decision on RTÉjr

Salary is far to big for a small country IMO if he wants to move to a bigger company in a bigger country serving a bigger audience, let him.

A year after he stood down as RTÉ DG it's been announced that Noel Curran has been appointed the new Director General of the EBU, he takes up his position in September.
