Hi guys, I am due to apply for my Irish Citizenship next month and would like some advice on declaring a drink driving conviction which happened in UK 12 years ago 2002. I have no any other convictions in UK or in Ireland but would like to know if its wise not to declare this conviction on the application. Do they do a criminal record check in UK as well ?. If i declare same how may this affect my application ? Your advice please !!! or anyone with a similar experience.

You should declare it because (a) you are legally obliged to, and (b) in practical terms, having a drink driving conviction is much, much less damaging to your application than having attempted to conceal a drink driving conviction.

personally I would leave it out

    What does “good character” mean?
The Garda Síochána (Ireland’s national police) will be asked to furnish a report about your background. Any
criminal record or ongoing proceedings will be taken into consideration by the Minister in deciding whether to grant
naturalisation or not. Details of any proceedings, criminal or civil, in the State or elsewhere, should be disclosed at
Section 12 on the application form.

Drink driving is put on your record. in the UK, after 10 years it is labelled as 'spent' - where it will not show up on record searches after this time. This is assuming you only have one DUI conviction

Its probably spent at this stage. No need to mention it if it is spent.

[cynic mode] You will probably be awarded extra points for your drinking exploits so declare them [/cynic mode]
