When insulating the water tank in the attic I found that the lid wouldn't fit snugly as the sides of the tank are bulging or bowed outwards. It's a black plastic tank 12 years old. Otherwise looks fine.

Also, how/where does the mains feed to the attic normally be ran up. Is it inside the cavity or inside the wall. I want to check the insulation on it but can't deem to trace it. It goes from the tank along towards the eaves. It's a dormer house. The shut off valve under the kitchen sink would be almost directly below.

Ok firstly with regards to the tank. is it bulging excessively or just a little bit ?
With some older tanks the side reinforcements isn't great and they do bow a little bit, I have never seen one leak from this happening, I would just ensure that when the tank is full its well below the lip of the sides etc and that the overflow will still function correctly.

The mains might be run inside a stud wall or similar, it shouldn't be run in the cavity that would be very poor practice and should never be done. Just insulate it as much as you can in all visible areas and unless you can trace it for sure you will have to leave it at that.

Bring a good quality torch up with ya and crawl as far as you can to try and trace it, you might spot where it drops, below.

    Thanks for the reply.

I had difficulty getting the tank insulated at the top because with the lid ends on, there was still gaps down each side. The tank insulation kit cover wouldn't fit over the gaps so I used black bin liners to cover the tank top and put rolled insulation all round.

The fill pipe looks ok up to the tank but I just couldn't see where it went. I wanted to make sure it wasn't going somewhere it may freeze as I have added insulation to the attic.
