I've a beef cow that cut a teat on a bramble in a bit of rough ground last summer, I got to it too late and it was all swollen and impossible to strig anything out or put tube in

I injected her for 4 days with antibiotic from yet.. Swelling went down but she is a three spinner :-(

She within a day or so of calving now and is perfectly healthy , bright, eating, chewing cud etc but she has heat in that swollen rear quarter and I think its painful to her as she lifted the leg in a kind of kicking motion towards that teat..

Can I do anything for her .. Reluctant to go injecting her so close to calving .. Is this normal with a lost tit? Touchwood I've had very little mastitis issues... I should have tubed this one in summer gone by

If there's heat there is infection there , have you tried to strip it out this year it may be coming back to milk as she is spinging up and be rotten with mastitis

I see what you are saying but it was rock hard last summer by the time I got to it .. and impossible to get anything out

haven't tried to pull out of it lately but its definitely more swollen than other 3 quarters.. I just presumed itd be blank.. I feed cows for a neighbour and 2 of them have only 3 tits

I'd like to get a hand on it before the calf gets a drag at it.

ill try pulling out of it after she calves to be on safe side but my money is that its a big dead hard mushroom TBH by the shape of it calf wouldn't get his mouth around it and other 3 teats are perfect.. I probably should get vet after she calves to cut it and let it drain

She's on top of calving, so she's springing away, if she's lost the spin and nothing comes from it I wouldn't be too concerned. I wonder is the flagging just making the quarter swell up?

ah yeah I know that tit is gone for sure..MY own fault too.. I bought her as a heifer with calf at foot but she was calving too late.. I had another cow (my best cow ) that lost a calf and I paired the two of them up and threw them around everywhere in rough gardens etc.. in hindsight I should have and will .. in future.. dry cow tube anything in Summer months that has ever bred a calf! I don't aim to keep a dry cow in the future either but these 2 were an exception to me

that cow calved and I could get nothing out of it.. calf gave up on it also .. really quick.. 3 tits always sucked.. that quarter tit always dry so im not worried any more .. she a 3 spinner!
