Criminal Legal Aid

I was researching up on this, just on the legal aid site and citizens info site; I might be confusing myself. But, does one apply to the Judge (Solicitor and/or Accused) on the day of the case and he/she grants it and then you apply the afterwards or does he (they) have to have a legal aid cert beforehand like with regard family law cases?

Please note, this is not for myself or a real case/scenario. Just myself getting confused researching the legal aid process.

Judge grants the cert on the application of an accused or their solicitor/barrister, then assigns it to a solicitor (usually the accused's choice).

Ah yes. I think I have a better idea now. Thanks.
