Selling my car - VRT paid but not taxed

I paid my VRT last year on a car from NI but haven't been driving the car and never actually got the car taxed. I never got around to declaring the car off the road before the new rule came in either.

My question is, can I sell the car to someone without having paid tax on it. I never received a log book or anything.

    Thanks

You only get the logbook when you pay the tax.

Not sure there's any way around this, since you can't sign a non-existant logbook over to someone else.

I'm sure there's a way round it but I think you are going to have to pay the tax back to last year

Hi op I would say if you sold to a dealer they wouldn't have a problem.

Why not email them on motortax.ie look it up under contact and ask them.

Just emailed the motor tax office. I'll post back with the answer. Anyone know any good dealers that will buy/swap an older BMW (2003) in Dublin.

You just need to send a letter to dept transport with the reg, chassis number and new owners details stating that the car was sold prior to its first taxing and can they issue an rf100 to the new owner. It takes about a week and once the new owner tax's the car the logbook will be sent to them

Did you get the reg plate without taxing the car?
I thought you had to tax the car for 3 months first?

you get the reg number straight away, you have to buy your own plates

Nobody is going to buy a car without the book given the number of scams going around so it might be an idea to 'sell' it to a family member so that the book can be issued to them without back tax being due.
