Camera shop V Pixmania for a lens

I bought a lens from Pixmania over Christmas. I had no problems at all. I opted in for the fast delivery and then noticed that it was coming from somewhere else in Europe. If I hadn't it might have taken a while to get here.

From what I have seen most problems with pixmainia only occur if something needs to be returned or replace, also the price you are looking at does not include vat.

Another place to look at if you are buying online would be amazon
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nikon-AF-S-NIKKOR-18-300mm-3-5-5-6G/dp/B008B14VAK/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1391510561&sr=1-1&keywords=Nikon+18-300mm

As above poster says the pixmania pro site you need to be a registered with a VAT number. Have used Pixmania.ie their retail division on numerous occasions and also dabs.ie and Amazon.co.uk.

You will save using them but when it comes to lenses and camera bodies most of the bricks and mortar shops prices have dropped over the last couple of years.

Me personally, I try and buy locally and would use Berminghams once there is not a huge difference in price as if you ever have a problem it is very easy to drop back in and get it looked at and I find them fantastic to deal with.

Check and see if they have one second hand one in stock. Their site is not showing any currently but I have found if you ask they tend to get them in.

i've never liked berminghams, and would usually put it near the end of the list of 'camera shops in dublin i would recommend'.
however, that is based on experiences dating back probably ten years.

Yeah I am old school I really want to go into a shop and buy but with that difference of a price I am slighty tempted.

I do have an 18-55 and 55-200 that I want to trade in against the new one so might ring around all the locals and see what kinda deal they can cut me.

Or....... would you keep the lenses in case god forbid the other lens broke?

I am really going to depend on them this year as I have a lot of commitments to fulfill.

Probably get more for the lenses if you sold them on adverts.ie

It was a saving of about €200 on the lens that I bought on pixmania compared to one of the camera shops. That's without a VAT number.

I keep an eye on camerapricebuster.co.uk and its easy to see what the cheapest place to get them. All the sites it checks are well reputable.

I have bought several cameras and lenses over the last 20 years there, including some very good second user and have always found their service excellent.
Their prices as with most other Dublin Camera shops were high compared to imports from HK without tax or warranties but have now fallen to a level that it is probably with paying the difference for the peace of mind of local service and assistance.
Pixmania ex Vat and delivery for your lens 715
    Bermingham ex Vat 755
IMO not a huge difference for local service and peace of mind

I used to hold on to the lenses but over the last year traded everything in and got rid of all the stuff i had lying around that I didn't use. As Adox said you will more than likely do better selling the lenses on adverts and then doing a cash deal with the shop.

I have bought from both pixmania.ie and amazon at times and there has been huge differences in prices on what they were offering and what it was in the B&M shop.

Always worth checking them out. €200 is €200 at the end of the day and better in your pocket.

Right so I went to Berminghams today, I rang them yesterday for a chat and well they couldn't have been more helpful on the phone.

Brought my lenses into them to get checked over. They are going to give me €150 off the new lens, the price with them is currently €929.

The camera shop on Grafton St had the lens at the same price but were offering lower trade in price.

Conns had similar trade in price but the price of the lens with them is €999 and with a cash sale I could only get them down to €30 extra off.

I looked online but just for that amount of money I want the personal touch and somewhere to go when it all goes horribly wrong and maybe a bit of discount on cleaning services in the future or even just a nice cleaning cloth :D

I know I could have gotten higher prices from a private sell but I just don't have the time to wait around I need this lens for new projects so I just want to walk in with the old lenses and then out with the new no messing around meeting people etc.

The fella in the shop today was most patient with me as I had an army of questions but I went away a happy camper!
