Short-term self-employed work - Tax queries

    Hey folks,

firstly, I am an idiot for not sorting this out ages ago :o
I need a bit of help regarding some work I did back in 2012.

In October 2012, I finished a 4-year postgraduate Ph.D. in an Irish university. During that period I was in receipt of a scholarship, and as a result I was not classed as 'working/paying tax' as such.

After my Ph.D. I did some consultancy work for a lecturer in the university. For payment, I invoiced the university, as I wasn't employed by them. It totalled 16 days, and gross payment was just under €2,000. The university deducted Professional Services Withholding Tax (PSWT) from my pay for my service. I did not charge VAT.

When I finished this consultancy work, I was then in receipt of social welfare until July 2013. I declared to the SWO the work that I had done, and my earnings from it etc. when I was applying for social welfare. In July 2013 I gained full-time appointment (with a company, not as a self-employed individual) and I have been paying PAYE/PRSI etc.

So I'm wondering from a Revenue/tax perspective what I need to do, and how to go about it? I never registered as 'self-employed' for income tax with the Revenue, or registered for Class S PRSI .... I wasn't really aware of these things back then, and I still am not :o

    Any help/advice is appreciated.

Get a form 12 fill in the 2,000 in income and whatever you received in social welfare. You will not pay any income tax, probably not much PRSI or USC.

You have paid €400 in PSWT so there will be a refund due to you.

    Good luck.

    Thanks Alan.

I just had a look at Form 12.
So I need to put in my social welfare income in Section 6, and the income I earned from the consultancy work in Section 12 and 13?

    Bump.....
just looking for confirmation from someone that in Form 12 I need to put in my social welfare income in Section 6, and the income I earned from the consultancy work in Section 12 and 13?

    Hi

Yes, but you also should check to ensure that the SW you received is actually taxable. Some SW payments are taxable while others are not.

You will also be entitled to the PAYE allowance so you should ensure you tick this.

    Regards

    Thanks dbran.
Probably a stupid question, but how do I find out the taxable amount of SW (Jobseeker's Allowance) that I received?

Also, is it the box in Section 46 - PAYE Tax Credit in Form 12 that I tick for the PAYE allowance?

One other question, in Section 13 - Credit for Professional Services Witholding Tax, do I put in the amount of PSWT that was deducted from my payment for the consultancy work?

Thanks very much for the help.
