Did you know Jews are banned in Saudi Arabia?

I was surprised when I heard this for two reasons.
    1. It's 2014 and blatant discrimination such as this still occurs and is endorsed by the state.
    2. The media never mentions this. No political commentators ever talk about it. We have 24 hour news channels that fill time with celebrity nonsense but apartheid in Saudi Arabia isn't worthy of discussion.

Where are the Dunnes Stores workers boycotting Saudi goods?
Why is apartheid ok when Arabs do it?
    Why doesn't Amnesty International care?

Realpolitik, society wouldn't have collapsed due to a shortage of South African fruit, would it without Saudi oil?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,126 ✭✭✭Reekwind

Surprised enough that you didn't question it? Saudi Arabia denies the claim.

Secondly, if Saudi Arabia is an apartheid state then it's because of its relentless discrimination against women, Shiite Muslims and migrant workers. Limiting tourism, whether Jews or unmarried women, does not an apartheid state make

I'm not talking about tourism. Jews are forbidden from settling in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I imagine life is unbearable for women too. I'm just shocked nobody ever talks about this. The media should keep the pressure on the Saudi government like they did with apartheid South Africa.

OP, do you have link to this law?

    BTW, they are denying this:

Saudi Arabia denies discriminating against Jewish passengers

Isn't everyone pretty much banned from Saudi Arabia? You can't go there even on holiday unless you have a 'sponsor'. And even then, non-muslims are barred from many sites.

    Obvious agenda to this thread

I think it only applies to people from Israel. Though I believe they make it difficult if your Jewish.

Yup. The OP started another thread asking why people care about Palestine. Really really bothers them.

Women are banned from driving, can't vote without male presence and the muttwa (religious police) harass women not wearing the hijab

There are severe restrictions on all foreigners settling in the Kingdom. It is virtually impossible for any Westerner to gain Saudi citizenship and almost as difficult to buy property

I'm all for highlighting the grossly reactionary nature of the Saudi state but get your facts right first
I've seen the signs. Those 'Muslim only' roads lead to Mecca and Medina, which are closed to non-Muslims. That is, by some distance, one of the least offensive Saudi restrictions on foreigners

Go Fracking! Then, once the oil is flowing from that, we can put on our ten-gallon-hats and six-shooters and tell the god-dam A-rabs to go screw a dromedary.

I was at a bus stop in London one day, and this bloke with ringlets for sideburns and a skull cap stood beside me.

We where there for at least half an hour, so I turned and said "what times this bus due?"

He said "I don't know you paddy Bastard"

    How rude.

I had an Uncle who is a Pakistani Sunni Muslim, who lived and worked there for years, and there was no chance in hell of him getting citizenship there. It is extremely difficult for anyone of any Religion including Sunni Muslims to gain Saudi citizenship.

So I was correct then. Jews are banned from Saudi Arabia.

So by following that line of logic, discrimination is ok once it's based on religious grounds?

These boring/ own political agenda threads are starting to bore everyone to tears. Unless you're that North Korean lad. He was good.

Ill boycott sand OP. Is that good enough? Go moan on the Saudi page or ask over on the Muslim threads.

Jew couldn't make this stuff anymore.

Is there a particular reason you're trying to derail the thread? Why don't you want apartheid in Saudi Arabia discussed?
And you're not a spokesperson for "everybody". Speak for yourself.

No. That's wrong. There is no legislation stopping Jews from entering Saudi Arabia. They are not "banned"

What they, and everyone else in the world, cannot do is circumvent the strict Saudi citizenship laws - unlike many Western countries there is no way to move from residence to citizenship. Which is objectionable. But to make this out as a case of antisemitism is entirely incorrect and likely to be just you fishing for trouble
So by following that line of logic, discrimination is ok once it's based on religious grounds?
That would be the case if that were an example of discrimination. Oh poor me, I'm not allowed to go to Mecca. How can I ever live with this injustice! Sheds tear

It is grotesque to complain about you not having access to two cities when the real crimes of the Saudi state are so much greater. I don't see you taking up the banner of the Shiites in the east of the country, who face constant discrimination and harassment from the state? Not being able to get a job because of your religion is discrimination, not being able to go on holiday to Mecca is tough on you

And incidentally, there are cities throughout the world (most notably Russia but also the USA) that are considered 'closed'; ie the state restricts access to them for various reasons. Mecca and Medina are not unique in this case

Why don't you want apartheid in Saudi Arabia discussed?

Probably for the same reason you're only interested in how the 'poor jews' are affected by it.

You said they're 'banned' from SA.. that's a blatant lie. They, as well as people of other (or no) faiths have restrictions placed upon them when entering the country or applying to do so.

Anyone can have a look at your post history, and it doesn't take a genius to figure out what your angle is in any of this.

How's about this for derailing your thread.. what are your feelings on the issue of black African women being coerced into having contraceptive chemicals injected into their bodies by Israeli authorities?
After Israel was accused of forcing Ethiopian women to accept injections of the contraceptive Depo-Provera in an attempt to lower birth rates among black immigrants, an official has for the first time admitted use of the drug among Ethiopian women.

It's not just limiting tourism. Not only are they banned from Saudi Arabia, most jews have been expelled from the arab world. The only reason it is not apartheid is because all the jews have been forced to leave. From Wikipedia:

From the onset of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War until the early 1970s, 800,000–1,000,000 Jews left, fled, or were expelled from their homes in Arab countries. Some place the emigration peak to a slightly earlier time window of 1944 to 1964, when some 700,000 Jews moved to Israel from Arab countries and were dispossessed of nearly their entire property.

It's interesting that the media rightly focus on Palestinians being expelled from their homeland but at the same time they say nothing about all the Jews who have been expelled from Arab countries with no right whatsoever to go back. Whatever you think about the history of Israel, at least it gave expelled jews a place to go. Most didn't settle there by choice.
Isn't everyone pretty much banned from Saudi Arabia? You can't go there even on holiday unless you have a 'sponsor'. And even then, non-muslims are barred from many sites.

    Obvious agenda to this thread

I've been there twice for business, as have lots of people. Lots of people go there for business or religious reasons. However, Israelis and people who have an Israeli stamp are banned. I don't know about Jews in general but as someone said, people are banned from expressing their religion which would exclude many people of different beliefs.

I am no supporter of Israel but they are a beacon of hope compared to Saudi Arabia. If you were going to ban goods from Israeli settlements, then the same rule could be applied to Saudi Arabia. And that's before you get into the treatment of women.
