kings mountain 200 is on the 15th of feb, a good introduction to the world of audax cycling. This is a 200k on a flat, circular route, meeting whitehall church car park at 7.30 am. lighting, front and rear is essential, as is a helmet and reflective gear, See audaxireland.org for details. Entries to be in by this friday

Signed up. Better be one of the easier 200s. Nervous about pushing the mileage out so early in the year.

I'm in Paul, but I'm turning back at the first sight of polar bears.

I can't do this at the weekend, but have adapted the route to start and finish in Swords, will be setting off at 7.30am tomorrow aiming to keep it leisurely, moving average 23-25kph and back about 18:00 if anyone fancies joining me.

Have fun. Watch out for the descent off the King's Mountain after Oldcastle. Surface is in a shocking state (or was last October). Holes big enough to swallow up the bike and stretches of 'road' which have more hole than surface...

Yep, I got a fine puncture from diving into one of those craters last year :)

Other than that, it was a great day on the bike, recommend it to anyone thinking of doing their first audax.

It was very cold today, if it's as cold at the weekend, really wrap up warm, and ware the lethal amount of black ice that will be liberally sprinkled across the first 100km before the sun does its work.

There is some flooding coming down off the King's Mountain, no drama, just don't be flying down, and you shouldn't be as the surface is shocking.

Evil headwind out to Oldcastle, lovely tailwind back! I'll take it that way round any day. :)

A very nice flat early season longun.

    Enjoy at the weekend!

Current forecast is for strong (force 6) westerly winds easing later. Possibly wet to start but drying out and getting sunny at times. There'll likely be standing water left over from friday's heavy rain. Cold enough, 3-5 or 6 degrees and chilling significantly after dark.

    Did everyone survive OK?

yeah Marc, 26 out of 27 got round safely, one rider pulled out at Ballivor, he had a sore back, but everyone else was fine. Windy and wet at the start, but after Athboy, the wind was fine, Paul

I survived, but my right knee not so much... off the bike for at least a week and a note to myself - never ever mess with the saddle before a big ride:mad:

I had to raise mine a few mm mid-ride in Oldcastle. Knees were getting sore earlier but fine thereafter (and I'm sure it wasn't just that we had a tailwind from then on...).
