High tax due to building credit history? Can anyone explain?

Hi, I was unemployed couple of years ago for 8 months.
I've got a new job and after several months (7 I think) I started to be charged very high tax. I'm not high income etc.
I asked financial controller in my company what is the reason for it.
He said that because I was unemployed I have to buil up my credit history.
Can anyone explain it to me in simple way? Also will I ever be back to normal tax charges? And how long does it take to build it?
Is there way of lowering tax I'm charged?
    Please help.

is this your first employment since that period of unemployment?

Income tax doesn't have a relationship to your credit rating so not sure what the financial controler is talking about here. but you should check whether you are on emergency tax - check your payslip for E as your tax status.

Being unemployed 2 yrs ago shouldn't have anything to do with your current tax status unless you actually own them back money. I don't understand what the financial controller is saying about your credit rating as that is a matter between you and banks or lending institutions.

Do you get payslips regularly? Did you get a P60 at the end of 2012 and you are due another one now for the end of the 2013 tax year.

Any overpaid tax can be claimed back. I'd ring the tax office to be honest and ask them whats the story

Credit rating is not a concept that affects your tax status.

What is possibly happening here is that you haven't applied for a certificate of tax credits from the tax office- this means that you are being charged 'Emergency tax' which is quite punitive. To fix this, you need to contact your local tax office and request a certificate of tax credits from them.
Do you have a PPS number (obtainable from your local Social Welfare office)? You'd need it when requesting a certificate of tax credits.

    I'm not on emergency tax.
Beside tax code I have N
I'm on monthly wage- sometimes total would be different from month to month but for example:
    Period 7: gross pay 1637.61
    Total deds. 175.89
    Period 8: gross pay 1956.60
    Total deds. 274.77
    Period 9: gross pay 1883.46
    Total deds. 252.11

I'm not having deducted any extras from my wage.
All it it's taken off is P.A.Y.E, P.R.S.I and USC
When I compared with my colleague with this same or even higher salary my deductions are higher.

I still didn't receive this year p60. Once I get it should I bring it to tax office?

Period 7 is spot on if you had been working all year (paye & personal tax credit only )-- i didnt check the others

if you only started work in 2013 it might be worth your while registering for payeanytime and requesting a balancing statement

i would guess your taxes are right for 2014

    EDIT
ok ... i read your post again ... when you started first you were paying less tax because you had unused tax credits built up for the year... That is what your financial controller meant ......

as for the others paying less tax - maybe they are using their spouses tax credits or maybe they have a medical card and are not paying USC
