    Anyone ever been?

Going to visit shortly enough, and given the reputation it has for being home to so many breweries and great beers, I thought it'd be worth asking if anyone had any recommendations.

I'll probably only be there a day or two, so does anyone have any "must-drink" recommendations?

Yep, I've been there twice. It's a lovely city. There are several breweries in and around the city centre, all of which make good beer in my experience. Schlenkerla is the busiest of them but if you like rauchbier (and I do) it's absolutely unmissable. Sipping pints of Marzen there is about as good as beer-drinking gets. The service at Schlenkerla is workmanlike rather than friendly, but the food is pretty good. I remember getting a lentil and smoked bacon dish that went very well with the beer.

I was there. It's a nice, pretty, boring German town. Good beer though.

Ah just that its a bunch of nice buildings and all but there wasn't much going on in the evenings when I was finished with the conference I was attending. No big surprise really as it's a small enough place, but it's not somewhere I'd rush back to at all.

Fair enough. It's not my main destination anyway, it's part of a road trip through Germany, so hopefully the beer should be enough to keep me occupied :pac:

I think it largely depends on when you go there. I've been to Bamberg 3 times and I'd never describe it as boring or quiet based on what I've seen, though it depends I suppose . The first 2 times I was there they had summer festivals on and the last time, last year, they were winding up for Sankerwa (something we just missed but I would definitely love to attend it as it looks awesome).

I'd recommend checking out obviously Schlenkerla, lovely spot, if a bit crowded and a must for Smoked Beer fans. Spezial is pretty cool aswell, great great beer and you might as well hit Faessla also as it's across the road! If you have the time, the Spezial Keller is pretty nice also, nice view of Bamberg. Greifenklau is nice aswell in terms of view, the beer is decent. But both are a bit of a walk.
Klosterbrau do a nice Schwarzbier aswell and it's pretty close to the city centre.

The old town is gorgeous to walk around, little Venice (klein venedig) is very nice spot for photos. If you're feeling adventurous, the walk to altenburg castle is pretty cool and the castle itself is lovely. Probably the best view of the city and a decent restaurant up there also.

The Bamberg bratwursts also I found to be some of the best in Germany.

    Enjoy!
