or prefer the old fashioned kind with librarians? I think it's a shame to see the human touch disappear. There was always something cosy and timeless about a library. Now it feels a bit like being in a supermarket or something.

The one out in Rush is amazing, its an old church. You can scan yourself or go to the librarian. I find it easier to do it myself. You just put the books on the shelf and they come up on screen, you press finish and your done.

It's the march of progress as unskilled labour is replaced with technology.
Can't wait until google self driving cars replace taxi drivers.

I find it mad that in the US they have entire universities dedicated to teaching you how to be a librarian, but yet here we get rid of them.

    Library? What's that?

Yes, love them. Can't quite figure out how the machine knows what you're checking out when there's a pile of books on top of each other. It's like magic!

I would have guessed that many US libraries would have a similar self service system.

Really. Which ones would they be?

My nearest library is in Rathfarnham. I used to love going there. It was lovely and calm with really friendly librarians. Now it's like a big noisy warehouse; there's no separation between the children and adults' sections and the kids just tear up and down the place making tons of noise. A lot of the older people who used to go in there to have a quiet read of the paper have been put off by the noise and chaos and the teenagers who take over the seating area, sprawled across several seats playing with their phones. I wish they'd left it the way it was. I rarely go there now.

It would be great if I could actually find what I wanted in my local library (Blanchardstown, Dublin 15). It's a mess. 20% of the books are on the wrong shelves, and I still haven't found out where the humour/comedy books are.

Genuine question, aside from checking in and out books what else is there to being a librarian?

They have the Dewey Decimal system anyway.
