Dura ace 9000 chainset compatibility

Does anyone know if the 11speed DA 9000 chainset is compatible with the 10 speed 7900 group. Shimano say no but have read on various forums where guys are running them together without any problems. Love the look and versatility of the 9000 so if this was possible I'd go for it.
