2009 Toyota Avensis 2.0D4D 6 speed

Hello all. I am thinking about buying a 2009 toyota avensis as the thread title says. I don't have much doubts about the reliability of the car as I know toyota make good cars. I'm pretty sure the mpg will be near enough the same as my current 1.8tdci ford focus. But what I am concerned about is leaking boots. I looked at two now and both of them had water in the boot. Both times I found maybe 1 inch of water in the left hand pocket(for want of a better description) behind the passenger side rear wheel. I know this isn't alot of water but at the same time I don't want to buy a car that I can't leave anything in the boot of.
Has anybody experience with this problem on the avensis? If so is it hard or easy to fix?

    Old shape or new shape?

The new one has quite a few build quality issues. The most serious of which concerns the front doors, the doors can warp in them because of a design flaw with the check strap. If this isn't attended to in time, it will result in the car needing brand new doors, though I would be surprised if Toyota didn't cover at least some of the cost as they're usually quite good on dealing with stuff like that out of warranty, especially anything with Toyota dealer history.

The old car is better made and more reliable. It's also more comfortable as the ride isn't as harsh. Having driven the Mondeo and Passat as well, both cars are simply light years ahead of either the old or new model Avensis - as long as you get the 2.0 diesel, the 1.6 in the Passat is so frustrating to use and not very good on juice, I haven't driven a 2.0 TDI Passat but I do know the engine in the 2.0 Mondeo is far superior to the 1.6 in the Passat, and just as frugal on juice in the real world.

I looked at another one of these cars yesterday and it also had water in the boot. It was actually in the spare wheel well. The salesman tried to claim that it would just be from when the car was washed. He reckoned that it would have got in when they were cleaning under the bootlid around the seals. But when I looked at that area it was filthy and definitely was not washed!!!

I have an 04 which is the same shape as the op is looking at and have never had water in the boot, unless something was changed on the 06 facelift.

The cars I have looked at so far are all saloons!

Nor had I but I always check the boot when looking at cars for crumple marks and the like. I just find it strange when i've found this in two of them.

Does anybody know what these cars are like on Diesel?

Generally alright if you can keep her at 2k revs. Anything over usually guzzles.

If she's UK then the suspension set up won't be ideal for Irish roads and frankly, it's not going to set the world on fire in terms or spec if Irish or indeed driving experience but if you want a nice solid comfortable bland car to get you about then it's a good choice :)

Irish spec has a stiffer ride and rides higher IIRC. It's to suit our wonderful roads.

Rough roads pack I believe it's called.

They did seperate setup for Ireland but after co2 became king they all have the lower suspension now.

There used to be differences in wishbones and spring thickness as well as ride height.

You would have thought so but not if there is water in so many of them.

My mother in law had a 02 avensis(older shape) and that gave awful problems with a leaking boot that they couldn't fix. They could not leave anything in the boot without it getting soaked.

Thanks for the feedback on the diesel consumption, according to Honest john its more or less the same as my 1.8tdci focus.

Hi OP, I've an 08 2.0 D4D TR from the UK, I get 45mpg with mix of motorway and city; as a previous poster said, keep revs under 2k for better efficiency. No leaking probs encountered yet. Bit bland and boring but comfy and sturdy.
