Strange noise from house

Hi all, was wondering if anyone here could help me with this? I moved on Friday into an old house, like a side part to an old manor house. It's fine other than one small problem. For the last two nights I've been here, at around six in the morning, I get woken up by a noise and I can't seem to find a source. It's a tapping sounds, very like an old typewriter but isn't consistent in the taps. It's quite loud and distinctive and is definitely coming from the bedroom, which has three outdoor walls. I haven't asked the landlady yet but was wondering if anyone here could shed some light on it? It's quite odd and, as you can imagine, annoying to be woken up so early :P

Do you have the heating timed to come on around this time.

Often the hot water in the copper heating pipes rubbing off the wood in the joists under the floor can create a noise like you described.

I was thinking the heating but the heating also comes on around 5 in the evening and doesn't have that effect.

Hi gctest, its definitely not bugs in my head :) it has been at 6 in the morn both times and its more a tap-click sound (again very like a typewriter) than a scratch.

I don't know, it isn't me that sets the heating. Its set from the main house. It's possible. Would it make usually noise at one time and not another?

Not to sound mad but could it be birds pecking something? I've seen crows do it before :P

    haunted house

I think I'll figure out if it's a physical problem with the way it's built or something along those lines before jumping to that conclusion :D

I wouldn't rule it out but it's a different type of noise and too loud

Yes its quite possible especially in older houses.

Im a plumber and trust me when it come to funny noises from pipes etc I have encountered quite a few, and its usually the pipe rubbing on wooden joists when they expand and contract when the heating is turned on.

It is always more noticeable in the morning as the system would of cooled down fully during the night, and when it comes on from stone cold in the morning obviously you would have the most expansion of the pipes. You may not get this noise in the evening as the system and house may be quite warm still

We had a large straw fan hanging above our better which used to tick now and again, it turned out there was and insect inside so we just burned it.

Crows are bolloxes for this carry on but I usually don't see them nest building till march onwards. That's when they are at their most annoying with your antics.

    I would say heating also.
Even if it doesn't happen in the evening when heating comes on, it probably doesn't happen in evening due to the house being warmer etc during the day. Also early in the morning it is nice and quiet and u'd hear more.

I guess I'm going to have to live with it then so. I'll have a talk with the landlady tomorrow and see what time the heating is set for and see if it can be changed :)

You will get used to it, honestly if it doesn't come on at that time, the house wont be warm when you get up. And by the sounds of it there are others to consider.

A lot of houses have noises like this.
