AMD Mantle - Lets test it

    Hey all,

    Strictly this should be in Graphics but that forum is dead....

    So, I thought it'd be fun to try out Mantle and see what kind of performance boost we might see in games in the coming months. According to Linus and Slick the benefit will be seen a lot on Strong GPU + Weak CPU setups. Lets find out.

    If we all use the same format it'll be easy to read:

    I watched AB while it was running, in the DirextX test GPU was at 35% load for a lot of the test. Its probably biased towards CPU load so I dont know how much of this will be seen in real gaming, but a free ~40% performance boost on my current setup would be awesome. Doubt you 4770k heads will see the same.

    I'll add an overclocked run later.

    Terrible for me at 1440P. Very Very sluggish with resolution scale turned up even a small bit.

    Some GPU stock/overclocked results with a HD7950 and i5-2500k at stock 3.3GHz.

    Would have expected mantle to gain more than DX11 with the GPU OC but then again its not really what you could call a true benchmark because it is so dynamic, you'd really need alot of runs to average it all out I suppose.

    Fraps will not work until they will release update for mantle.

    How stable is 14.1? Reluctant to grab it incase its unstable at the moment. I know its only out but just looking for first impressions

    I triggered a premature ghost image before installing it but no signs of any trouble yet.

    This seems to be the point the star swarm demo is trying to hammer home, look at all the time spent in the DX11 driver. :)

    In principle what is already in the driver from previous versions should be fairly stable, I doubt much or the core of the driver has changed a whole lot outside of tacking on additional support for mantle, HSA for APUs, and frame pacing for multi monitor.

    That said if none of those things are of any great interest to you, might as well wait for an official release version and let others be the crash test dummies :).

    Think i will wait for the moment,i have read mantle is not working well with crossfire in BF4 and that is the only game id be playing using it.

    13.12 is working so well for me.

    Sorry for taking thread off-topic,my next post will contain results,hopefully soon:)

    Did you fully uninstall the old drivers alot are having problems with that, usually you can just install them over the old ones but nof for this beta apparently.

    The other thing I have seen is that you have to restart the game as well after switching to mantle to get good performance as well

    OC to 1200/1400 => 18.99 and 37.76

    The same OC brings 3DM11 from x2277 to x2538.

    Not sure Swarm is quite reliable yet. I notice utilization of CPU and GPU plummet mid bench and it only manages 5-7fps.

    This is the perfect setup to demo Mantles advantage. And wow does it show.

    4670k and r9 290.

    With 13.12, silkly smooth on ultra 2560x1080.

    With 14.1, much lower framerate on same settings using DX, still playable.

    With 14.1, abysmal unplayable framerate at those settings using Mantle API, averaging about 30-40, hits 10-12 fps at times.

    I think the unit numbers are random for Star swarm sp you'd need to do several runs.
