It's calculated as percentage of the Original Market Selling Price (OMSP). It has nothing to do with what you paid for the car. Revenue decide what the OMSP of the car is.

There is a vrt calculator available on vrt.ie which will give you an idea of what you will need to pay.
The payment is not calculated on what you paid but what they say the car is worth here.

VRT is calculated as percentage of OMSP (Open market selling price).
This OMSP is a price revenue thinks the car is worth in Ireland.

Obviously fact that VRT exists makes car prices in Ireland higher, so automatically OMSP is higher then OMSP of the same car in UK.

Even though VRT is calculated as percentage of OMSP in Ireland, making it tax calculated as percentage of price which already contains this tax.

In other words, VRT is calculated on price of car which already contain VRT, so effective VRT rates are higher then shown by revenue.
Very simple mathematical trick which revenue is using to hide the real VRT rates.
