feeding silage to calves

    Ive three month old angus sucks on straw and ration there was an auld lad in the other day and he said id want to give them a bit of silage . Would it be any advantage or could iyt give them pot bellies like hay

    i think it could be a bit hard on theyre stomach, but id say at 3 months should be ok

    If you have access to haylage go ahead.
    At 3 months I mix hay and haylage in the diet feeder and give them enough for a week. Works grand. Then at 4 months just haylage. At 5 months they are on silage.

    Ya silage would be fine I actually think the calves will do better on it than hay/straw and the wouldn,t be any pot belly probs

    Really depends type of silage, haylage or very dry baled silage with bit of stem would be my preferred choice at that age.

    Its second cut at ten weeks not a lot of stem but its nice stuff just damp never got rain

    i give mine a small bit of silage and straw. Any silage that isnt ate is taken away each day

    A lot of work for no benefit
    heiffer replacments calves here on straw and meal and 99% make weights
