SNES TV Connection Problem

I got my hands on a Super Nintendo (PAL) console.

It came with the power cable and the antenna connector (RF Out)

I'm trying to hook it up to a modern LG tv but I believe I need the
composite cable - that goes into the 'Multi Out' port at the back in order
    to hook it up properly.

Is that right? And if so does anyone know if these can be picked up handily
in Dublin somewhere or is it best to order a genuine part online?

    Thanks

If you want the best quality image (and running a Snes into a modern flatscreen means you really do want the best image as the retro consoles tend to look pants on modern panels), then I'd recommend buying a proper RGB scart cable from a site called consolegoods

They are very good, I've used them several times & the RGB image is second to none, it would put RF & the AV signals to shame. However, a lot of people suffer from a 'cross-hatch' effect when running a retro console, particularly a Ninty one, into a modern screen. I'm not sure but I think it's something to do with the internal scalers in modern screens, & to get rid of this, you need to use an external scaler which is more money. Depending on the tv though, this may be a non issue.

Yeah I got that, the original reply had www.consolegoods.co.uk which doesn't work.

    Edit: it's back up now

thanks for your reply. Can you tell me please what you mean about it looking awful with that other cable? is it slightly inferior picture quality or lines on the screen or what?

It's pretty much a hugely inferior picture quality which looks even worse on a HD TV.

There's a good comparison here that shows you the effect:

    http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?145340-Sega-Genesis-video-picture-comparison-IN-RGB-ANALOG-COMPOSITE-RCA-AV-amp-RF-COAX!

Notice that RGB is a hell of a lot sharper. Still images don't show how bad it really is since there's also dot crawl effects with composite which look like this:

I never believed the advantages of RGB until I was indoctrinated into the cult of RGB by good friends here in A&R forum and brain washing retreat!
Now I love RGB, my screens are free of dot crawl and I've got crispy scan lines instead!
I'm so happy, Streets of Rage and Golden Axe have never looked so good!

    Hmm...
Something wrong with that statement and I can't put my finger on what it is....

People lump rgb in with just regular av scart. When you see true rgb scart though, it's so completely different. It's like going from vhs to dvd

Was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for hooking up a PAL SNES to a computer screen. Contacted console goods but they didn't have anything. Just wondering if anyone had come across anything that worked in the past.

    Thanks

Outside of RGB to VGA or DVI you'd be out of luck. Maybe look into converters like that although I'd say a lot of american ones will support s-video and not RGB.

    It's possible alright, but expensive.

You'll need to buy the following.

    Buy a Snes RGB cable.
    A Sync Strike.
    A Scaler
An SLG3000 (Optional to add scanlines)

OR you can buy a kit containing all of the above from Arcadeforge.

    http://arcadeforge.net/SLG3000/DIY-Scaler-Kit::29.html?MODsid=fbf3d7b507c23b44dc47e54abe2fd9e7

With that kit all you'll have to do is plug your RGB snes scart cable in one side an a VGA cable out the other side to your monitor.

I would search averts and try and purchase(or get for free) an old CRT TV, much better picture quality when it comes to old consoles all the way up to XBOX, after this HD TV is the way to go.

Is a HD tv with the above rgb pal scart lead same quality as the old CRT tv setup?

Kind of. The problem is that CRT TVs give a much better picture than LCD TVs can. They have better refresh rates, interlacing scan lines, anti aliasing effects, much richer colour and perfect black levels. LCDs only really have a resolution advantage. Most old games are built with CRTs in mind and will use the quirks of the CRT display in there over all display. For instance on a HD TV old games will look blocky and pixelated while on a CRT the interlacing breaks up the pixelation so they look antialiased.

Having RGB on your LCD TV is however a decent alternative if you don't have room for a CRT.
