I'm looking to get hold of some high proof alcohol, so as to make tinctures/bitters for my cocktails. I'll use vodka if all else fails, but does anyone know if/where a regular person can get hold of some?

Not sure you can, other than the expensive strong poitin Celtic Whiskey sells.

No, not here. If you know anyone coming back from the continent, they can pick it up in the supermarket for you.

I would guess the high % poitin probably has a nasty "authentic" taste.

The cleanest vodka I have tasted is Skyy, which is 40%. The guy who came up with it set out to make a flavourless "congener free" which would reduce the hangover effect of impurities. Skyy is suited to cocktails as it imparts little flavour of its own. Many vodkas purposely add back in disillate to give a vodka flavour.

The low % means it will not extract as well of course. I have put bottles in the hot press so it works better.
