    Location, location, location??
RNLI inland - Lough Derg, Enniskillen, etc
Coast Guard - heli and/or land/water response everywhere
    Civil Defence - everywhere
Fire Service - depends on the county
    Voluntaries- Everywhere...

Irish coastguard has responsibility for rescue on inland waterways and Irish coastal waters. They will use all available and appropriate resources. Including the above listed.

For example garavogue river in Sligo, you might not know it but only take option I see it's life buoys and possibly heli! Even in other areas of the country, doubt civil defense or other voluntaries bar maybe the retained fire stations would be able to respond fast enough! Even in the fire stations I believe only a few of them have water rescue capabilities!

Your not forgeting the Sligo RNLI are you?? No offence, but you obviously don't really know what your talking about. Just Google any river or lake town/city in Ireland and put voluntary rescue on the end of it.
There are some small and very large local rescue groups in Ireland who do wonderfull work and do not recieve the congrats they deserve, it because of people like you going out and saying stupid ****e with no clue!
As for Fire Stations, who's fault is that, not the fire fighters get on to your local counciler and ask why they don't take pay cuts, give back their Child Benefit, etc... Maybe this might put a little funding into the Fire Service so they can provide the service their suppose to..
