Every now and again a horror movie comes out of nowhere and completely reaffirms my faith that in a world of remakes and watered down PG13 crap, there are a few people out there making movies that can still shock me, that can make me sit up in my chair at what Im watching and that can entertain me from start to finish, Martyrs managed it, Inside managed it and so did The Loved Ones. If you enjoyed those movies Id urge you to check this one out.

Another entry in the new wave of Australian horror and part of the horror movie sub genre staple of revenge, DLG tells the tale of a doting father whose only daughter is kidnapped and murdered. By sheer coincidence the grieving Dad accidentally discovers the identity of the killer which sets the wheels in motion of the most visceral, sadistic and ferociously entertaining slab of on screen carnage Ive seen in a long long time.

What sets this apart from the majority of modern horror movies first and foremost is that there is not one use of CGI in it which considering how it progresses, it really must be applauded. The effects work itself is staggeringly realistic, this is a relatively low budget flick but Id reckon the majority of said budget went on the effects, they really are that good.

In the second half of the film there is a distinct line of pitch black humour running throughout and I actually laughed a number of times.

This movie will have a hugely polarising effect on people I think, there will be no middle ground with it. I personally loved it but my tastes in movies tends to be askew with the majority of people and horror is my first love.

Horror fans I think will be massively entertained, casual/non horror fans, maybe not so much but Id encourage people to give it a chance, if for no other reason than to support the indie horror scene.

Movies like A Serbian Film relied far too heavily on shock tactics to try and make a name for itself so much so that it turned into a near pantomime exercise.

DLG never loses its air of reality and I for one cannot wait to see what the maker will come up with next.

From a quick Google, reviews seem mixed!

But as for Aussie horror, I agree that 'The Loved Ones' was one of the better off-beat horror of recent years.

    Sounds interesting.

I enjoyed Martyrs and The Girl Next Door (although they were extemely tough to watch in places) and have Inside waiting to be watched in my DVD collection. I have no interest whatsoever in watching exploitative trash like A Serbian Film, though.

The premise sounds quite similar to another Australian film, The Horseman (which also sits on my shelf waiting to be watched!). Have you seen that?

Why is it a horror though?

Is it not just a revenge film then?

One that I would probably be cheering on the protagonist in? (Daddy, not the little girls killer)

I would want to see that bastard suffer like

I got a copy of this ages ago but that God awful poster put me off watching it. It looks like something thrown together in 5 minutes on MS Paint

I didnt read any reviews, a guy I know through a horror forum put me on to it. He is based in New Zealand and its been doing the rounds on the festival circuit there over the last 12 months and finally got released on the 8th of January. The initial release is region 4 which plays on DVD players over here, not sure about the coding for Blu though.

Ive seen The Horseman alright. They are similar that the spine of the movies are about fathers getting revenge on their daughters killers but The Horseman is as much a road movie as a revenge movie imo. In terms of content though they are poles apart. The Horseman uses alot of cutaway / suggested violence, DLG doesn't, literally everything is shown up close.

Another difference is that for the first half of DLG we get to know the Dad and his little girl and I have to admit, it did tug at the heart strings a wee bit.

I Spit on Your Grave and Payback are both revenge movies, one is considered by most to be a horror, one is a thriller, it comes down to content imo.

The premise of DLG isn't a horror movie but its delivery most definitely is. This is high impact body horror with a theme of revenge running through it.

Believe me, you will be cheering the protagonist on, unequivocally. There are a couple of scenes that made me laugh despite what I was witnessing and I was willing the father to commit unspeakable acts once he found out who the killer was.

I think you might be getting this confused with something else mate, it only got released on DVD on the 8th of January this year. The cover art is below.

This one was only used when it was been screened in Oz.

That's the one I have here, was given it months back by someone to watch and that bottom poster really put me off. Said I'd watch it once I finially opened my Blu-Ray of Horseman and as such it could be awhile
