    Hi anyone and everyone,

I have read a few threads on the whole CPC subject and I noticed most, if not all are possibly outdated. I think they are anyway because of the whole new system brought in with new theory discs n all that jazz.

Anyway, my question is what way is the cpc done as of 2014? I have my Truck/Bus theory test booked for February 12th and I won't book my cpc until that's passed. But I would still like to know, how to I go about booking and what can I study and what to expect? I have googled it, checked the RSA website and the best info I can find is here on boards but its all from a few years ago. even if it's 2013, the new disc and all came out December 2013.

So any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Preferably info from people who have done the whole process recently but really any info at all from anyone who knows what the story is. The RSA boys were no help at all.... They just keep telling me to check the site. Can't even find the price of it!

    Addition:

Is it still in this sequence...
    1. Get truck/bus theory test passed.
    2. Get cpc multiple choice and cpc case study passed.
    3. Get rigid full license passed.
    4. Get some other cpc practical test passed?? (Not exactly sure where that one fits in)
And finally 5. Get my Arctic full test passed

I can understand your confusion. Let me split this up.
At the moment it is possible to do Theory test get a learner Permit, do lessons pass rigid test. You could then do Cpc as a seperate test later or after Artic. The practical Cpc is a 20 min test regarding vehicle and load safety talk through test.

The new format is due (no specified date) late Feb early Mar.
Theory test and Multiple Choice are being combined into 1 test. The rest is the same
    Hope this helps

Thanks a million for that! Makes it all a lot clearer. I think it is in already though because my theory test is 100 question and from what I remember from years ago it used to only be 45 or so?

So what your saying is I can go ahead and do my theory on the 12th and do my rigid full test and the Artic full test BEFORE I do the cpc? Is the cpc just something I need before getting a job and driving professionally? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions, just can't seem to find the answers anywhere!

Can you tell me how much you paid for the test?
Cpc just needs to be completed before you take up PAID work as a driver.
    The questions are fine btw.

I paid €45 for the theory test online. Earliest test I could get was the 12th! I'm hoping to get Fás or the dole to pay for lessons and/or full test as I can't afford those. I'm pretty sure if I get a signature and a letter from someone who will give me work then Fás or social welfare will pay what I need to get qualified! If not I'm stuffed :-/

I think I'll do the cpc ASAP anyway because I'll have the theory side of it all out of the way and can just concentrate on the driving

Depending on how long you've been signing on then there is SOME assistance available. But they won't cover all the costs. That's why I recommend getting driving test nailed first and delay CPC until you have a Lic passed.

I've been signing on for quite some time so there shouldn't be a problem with that. Hopefully they help a good bit though because I can't afford much with two kids and my partner all on my social welfare claim. I might have to get my rigid license and cpc with help from dole or Fás then get a job driving the rigid to pay for the Artic license. Just thinking out loud here!!

Hi I recently passed my C theory test and awaiting learners permit in the post. There is a delay of 5 to 6 weeks
My question is presuming I pass my C driving test, do I have to do the CPC. I would not be receiving money for driving only assisting my partner from time to time.

    Hi Base Price!
First of all congrats on passing the theory! Just 9 days till I do mine!

As far as I understand, you don't need the cpc unless your getting PAID work. Although I would presume you would have to have a cpc cert if working at all on lorries (pay or no pay) but apparently it's for paid work only.

I'm still learning and finding out more wash day about t all myself so sorry I'm not much use. I'll keep posting what I find out on here anyways. When I go in for my theory I'll ask heaps of questions about the neat few steps anyway so hopefully I'll know a lot more in just over a week!

Best of luck with the test :)

Hey anyone and everyone! Just an update to the thread in case anyone wants extra info or anything!

I passed the theory test :-) it consisted of 40 questions which I didn't expect because I was told it had been changed to 100 and the practice disc tests you on 100 questions each practice. Anyway it was 40 questions, 2 of which I got wrong but they don't tell you which 2. I find that stupid and annoying but at least a pass is a pass.

Anyway, new things I've found out!
The theory definitely did consist of cpc questions so yes, that has changed. So the first cpc test has merged with the theory test and now I need to do the cpc case study test and the practical cpc. Haven't yet found out how much they both cost but I'm currently waitin for a letter from an employer which states I'll get work if I get my Artic license so that I can then go to Fás and ask for funding. From there then I will go about getting my cpc tests done an my lessons for the rigid. That's all providing Fás do help me!!

I'll keep posting on this when I learn more and know ore about the latest way about things!

Good luck to anyone else taking this career path! ðŸ‘

Thanks for that I was led to believe the new test wasn't coming in til end Feb early Mar. Did they say it covered Theory and Part 1 Cpc at test centre?

Yeah I found it very hard to get any solid information from the RSA themselves. I actually didn't even ask the people at the test centre. I just knew it had cpc related questions because of the question code at the top. Hard to explain what I mean by that. If you have the latest theory test practice disc (6th edition) every question has a code. I think the codes separate them into category and number. For example one could come up as cpc-149 so it's cpc related and question 149. Don't take this as solid information but more of a guess of mine. Like I said, it's very hard to get solid information from anyone. I'm just posting things I now know to be the case and things I think are probably the case.

Please feel free to correct anything I say if you know better.

    As a side note:

I'd like to give out about the price of everything so far.......

    Theory test is €45
Medical report (which you need before you can send your info off for the Learner Permit) is €50
To send off your info to get your permit so you can start getting lessons... €35 :-/

Before you can actually book a driving lesson for the rigid, they've already got €130 out of ya.... ridiculous.

I can't see how the new card permit/licenses cost so much to get. Every visit to the doctors is €50 i suppose. But €45 to go in and sit at a computer for a maximum of 45 mins?? crazy!!!

I've a feeling these changes are not complete.
We done a tot up of all costs excluding lessons to do Rigid and Artic and it runs to about €500 and that's getting everything 1st time.
Not good news especially if you're trying to get back into workforce.

Hopefully I'll know more after talking to Fas. And hopefully they will help a lot with the funding because this is me trying to get back into the workforce. I'll be getting my letter from employer on Tuesday so probably Wednesday I'll be in with Fas or Intreo as they call themselves these days! I'll post all I find out here once I've had the chat with them!

If you have a licence from before 2008 and have done NO CPC at all, what do you have to do now (2014) in order to be CPC compliant?

You'll need to do the modules

Yeah you'll have to do the cpc tests!

Was in with the NDLS people today giving them my application and I asked about the cpc. They of course didn't know much but agreed that the first cpc (the multiple choice) is or is going to be merged with the theory test. I reckon it already has, as I said I have no solid info yet but will keep ya's posted! Should be booking mine in the near future anyway!

Hey actually there is something on the RSA website about professional drivers since 2008.

    This link

    http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Professional-Drivers/Driver-Hours/Getting-your-CPC/

Shows all cpc info (can be very confusing)

    It says

    'Acquired rights' to Driver CPC

If you got your bus licence on or before the 9 September 2008, or your truck licence on or before 9 September 2009, you are automatically entitled to Driver CPC. This is called “acquired rights”.

    Hope that helps!

Looks like your automatically entitled :-)

Yes but he should have been doing the module per year for last 5 years therefore 35 hours of classroom training, he will now have to catch up to keep his acquired rights

Yes thats my question how many modules need to be done as my friend has previously done none but has acquired rights.

I am going for the C licence myself but I won't be going for the CPC as I won't be driving for a living.

He has to do all 5 modules at 7 hours each therefore 35 hours training this is called Periodic Training ,he will then do a module per year while he remains a paid driver . A new driver would do Initial Training which is theory tests and a practical test to qualify for CPC, he would then begin doing a module per year to keep qualified.

Hey was listening to RTE Radio today. Big argument about cpc n all but it did explain a bit about what it entails at the moment. Check out the RTE Radio site I think you can listen back on it from there. http://www.rte.ie/radio1/
