FYI: Euro replacement cylinders

    Hi all,
Just want to share my experience on this topic as I only found scattered information when I was looking.

I've been looking for options since I was broken in a year (two) ago [lock snapped] and my search concluded with Avocet ABS cylinders that have the best security standards (Google it for details) certification.

As part of my research, I tried to find who can provide those cylinders in Dublin and found prices starting from ~€70 to €150 (without installation). Best value and service was provided by Pro-line hardware in Inchicore. A year later, one of the cylinders had a technical fault and they were prompt to replace it too. Very reliable and customer friendly, would certainly recommend; they do more than just locks. I got three keyed alike locks for €67 each.

When measuring, make sure that the cylinder is flush and doesn't stick out more than half a cm if at all. If you have basic DIY skills, you can change the cylinder yourself, its on just ONE screw! So get the locksmiths for other complicated jobs and paying someone €50 to €100 to unscrew/screw just one screw is insane:eek:. Nothing against the locksmiths though, they'll have to call out and all so its justified (from their perspective):D.

    HTH.:)

What sort of cylinders did you get? anti snap? anti bump? anti pick? and roughly what price?

Amazon is good value for the high end Yale anti snap/bump cylinders.€30 odd delivered whereas you'd pay over €50 in b&q.

If you're going for the more expensive euro anti bump, anti snap, anti whatever, get it MILA in kilbarrack if you can. Forget b&q, woodies and the like. No comparison in price

Avocet ABS locks are TS007 3 Star rated and SS 312 Sold Secure Diamond certified. They are ant-Snap, Pick, drill & bump and none of the cylinders mentioned match these specs.

Yale Platinum series (seller on Amazon wouldn't ship it to Ireland and the local retailers don't stock it) is the nearest with TS007 3 Stars (no SS 312 though) and MILA isn't even in the league! :p

And one more thing that I didn't mention about the keys that they are 8 + 1 magnetic pins and come with key-code cards (so if you temporarily share a key, you don't have to worry about it being copied without your knowledge). All types of locks they supply can be key'd alike too! ONE key for all your house, garage, shed etc...

Google Avocet ABS cylinders for details :)
Best of all, you can buy it directly from the company's dealer Pro-line hardware in Inchicore (★★★★★ customer service :)).

CORRECTION: Yale's AS Platinum is 3* and AS Series is 1*

Yes, it's the AS series I got. Seems to be one step down from platinum. You can buy a Yale AS 70mm on amazon for 20 gbp. If you spend 25 gbp on your order you've free delivery to Ireland. For me that's good value for a seemingly decent cylinder but I'm no locksmith or burglar.

Probably all I would prepared to pay, as I imagine I have weaknesses in other door hardware anyway.

It does seem to be a shop around, DIY job because the locks I've seen installed by locksmiths where the customer knows no better (eg the mother) have been very basic.

    Thanks for the info.

Yep, AS is a step (or two) down from their Platinum range and there are other shortcomings like 6 pins (instead of 8) and no magnetic pin in these cylinders, so they are NOT PICK PROOF. Also, they have limitations on keyed alike (master keyed) option.

All in all, ABS seems to be the top of the range and as always, there are and will be cheaper, fewer-feature versions in the market. I have it on all my external doors (front and 2 back doors) keyed alike so have two keys to carry in my pocket (car and home :))

Hi jRoy, just wondering how many keys you got with the three locks? I'm looking for two keyed-alike locks and am hoping they come with 3 keys each. Thanks.

I got three keys (not nine) for the three locks... obviously if you want to share access with more than three people, you could order extra key for fiver I think.

    Hi there.

I was going to buy the ABS MK3 Double Cylinders but I need 30*30 for my doors, and it seems that the xx/30mm EXT sizes do not comply to BS-TS007:2012 3 star due to the cylinder having 6 combination pins, compared to 8 in all other sizes)

So is it better to go for a 35mm size and have 5mm overlapping the external door, or choose the 30*30 even though they have 6 instead of 8 pins and are not British Standard approved because of that?

Or maybe find a different brand that has a better 30*30 option?

    Cheers

Just wondering if anyone has any idea on question above?

I can't see any issue with 5mm of lock protruding.
However I have replaced similar locks, and i noticed the mounting screw is usually offset from center, so you can install the lock either way around, and have the extra bit inside or outside.

Just dont give your name and address to anyone you are buying the lock from....

    Why?
I know with Avocet you must register the locks in case you need a replacement key.

why would you need to provide your address? doesnt that make it less secure? where are they holding this information? what if that becomes compromised? and they dont know its happening?
Surely some other from of authentication could be provided? ie a PIN sent to your email or mobile number?
What if someone wants to change address and decides to take the locks with them? so long as they purchased them, shouldnt that be all thats needed.

Info held in a database obviously. You cannot get a key copy without proviiding them with your details together with a credit card sized i.d. provided when purchased. I understand that the replacement key distribution is very tightly controlled. The keys themselves have built in security and cannot be easily copied.
Everything has it's own level of insecurity. You could be concerned that the locksmith who fits them could be a potential threat etc, etc.

Just get the right sized cylinder, so people dont have a few mm to put a pliers onto and snap your cylinder.
Or you can pay the extra and get anti bump/snap cyliders from crowds like Mila, Window & Door Accessories, Locks and hardware

Could anyone advise me if I can get a ABS Euro cylinder lock with 25mm external & 35mm internal. Its for a patio door. If needs be I can go for a 30/30 but want to avoid any cylinder showing if possible.

The existing lock is 35/25? Are you sure on these measurements?
