Focus Ghia, it's in a high spec and nicer to drive than the Golf.

Golf is very basic spec; no idea on the c'eed

    That Golf is stupid money.

Was thinking that however Golfs in general seem to be very expensive.

She'll get used to it, get her to drive the Mondeo.

With that budget you should be able to pick up a facelifted mk 2.5 focus (2008 on) such as this

That's a Sportline Golf. It's not the best specced car on the road by any stretch of the imagination but the Focus Ghia doesn't have anything extra over it either.

Thought I'd never say it but the Kia is the best option here IMHO. Its for a low miler city driver so petrol and auto is best. Not to mention the 2+ years of warranty left on it. Plus it has a/c. Not sure if the Ford has a/c but it looks like the golf does not.

Except foglights, steering wheel controls, A/C (does the Golf have cruise?)

Probably however I don't see the point in making her drive something she isn't comfortable in.

Also looking to go to small engine for cheaper tax, insurance and petrol costs. Will probably have to go down a year or two however that doesn't particularly bother me.

Is there much difference in the Zetec and Ghia specs in the Focus? Also is the tax much different in the 1.6 petrol per and post '08?

Just to mention that the ghia spec focus also has rain sensor wipers and cruise control. Its well spec'd compared to most cars of that age

And the real reason comes out .... :pac:

As mentioned above the Ghia gets cruise control and rain sensing wipers, some extra chrome strips on the outside, Ghia badges (naturally) but it also gets some pretty nasty wood trim on the dash too!

Tax wise, I'm not sure about the 1.6, but I know the 1.4 actually costs more after 08 as it has quite high emissions, so it's cheaper to tax on cc's!

    and?

Not everyone believes in spending 100s on car tax. Perhaps people who complain should go out and buy a brand new 4 litre to keep themselves happy

But a lot of people are content to pay thousands more on the purchase price of a 2008 car with cheap tax in order to save those 100s over a 2007 car. A lot of people only see the headline saving.

True. OP main reason was that his partner doesnt like driving his mondeo so he wants to buy a different car.

I see your point as well

I will be going down in years so paying off a small outstanding loan and using the balance to buy a smaller car that my wife feels comfortable driving.

Going from a 2 ltr to a 1.6 will reduce costs one of being tax. I see this as a benefit rather than a reason to change, I have already given the reason.

The type of car I was looking at within my budget will be around the 07/08 years so hence the tax question. It will not determine which car I buy was more out of curiosity.
