Not using a this thread to advertise Apps. I use an app to log a run or walk and find it gives me a reasonable idea of how I'm getting on. I'm using MapMyRun for iOS. Anyone else use an App to monitor a workout. I find it useful for setting up a running route I wouldn't have considered before.

I only use one to give my pace and distance while training. I have used endomondo on Blackberry (in the free version you can only get the pace once per mile or kilometer, which is not great I'd like 0.5 mile especially when trying a new pace), and run keepper on Android which used to great but the newer version does work with my Android 2.1. I ll be trying a simpler one this week-end.

Obviously a gps watch is probably better but costlier.

I'm running with the Polar Beat app on Android at the moment. Pairs nicely with my HR unit. Accurate HR data via bluetooth.

Tried Wahoo fitness app but found it very buggy.

Both apps use GPS to track your route and have inbuilt options for treadmill running or bike sessions.

I use mapmyrun when doing longer runs, as I find it handy to have an update given through my earphones while running. I must say though that it is obviously less accurate than my GPS watch (or the other way around, but I would reckon the Garmin is more accurate?). It is usually fairly close, but every so often it can be a decent bit out on distance.

Used Endomondo extensively in 2011, found the paid app was great especially paired with the back end site statistics and log of your runs / pace / distance etc. but they went and made a lot of the good site features premium, i still use the endomondo app though.

Would consider changing over but all my run data from 2011 on is on their site :-/

runkepper and strava both have the audio prompts for pace, distance etc. With runkeeper you can also set up intervals (with audio prompts also)

I used to use runkeeper prior to getting my garmin, but now use Strava with my garmin but only to review my data etc, prefer it over garmin connect, and also Strava has challenges and very nice training diary feature. I also exported all my runs from runkeeper in to Strava. I believe there are connector sites now to even do this for you

I just have the Garmin and Strava apps for looking at stuff I did before on rare occasions, might want to check what time I did on a race the year before for example, or what time someone else did.

Have only used the phone for actually logging a run when I've had Garmin watch calamities, usually whilst travelling in foreign climes when I've forgot the charger or it decides that it doesn't like the foreign satellites that are overhead at the time. Have then had to resort to Mapmyrun and Endomondo on a couple of occasions, but then just grab the gpx that they generate and load it up to Garmin Connect.

Started using endomondo recently to track runs, particularly out on road where its hard to judge when you've hit the 1 or 3 or whatever mile mark. Helps judge pace better and good stats available on uploading to their website. Plus it saves trying to measure distance of a new route by driving or using google maps!

I find the distance can be slightly out, but not by enough to bother me most of the time, its just that it updates every few seconds/meters and if that overlaps with the end of the run, or 1mile split, it puts the time out a little. But cant complain too much, its a free app afterall. Id expect the premium to be better on that front though

See the paid for App is different to Premium (site).

I did notice this also, i ran the Raheny 5 mile last weekend and both my gf and i hit start on endomondo and hers mapped 8.05km and mine mapped 7.47km.
I was using a Samsung Galaxy S3 mini and she was using an S3 standard.

I've seen some of the newer phones produce much better results and also where it is on your body makes a difference eg in a pocket or one your arm
