Is there a club in your bag you fear.

In fact is it a club you fear so much it shouldn't be in there at all.

For me over the last while at different stages it was.

    Fairway woods
    Driver
    Wedges
    Putter.

But with help. Im getting there.

Lol. Pathetic. Imagine being afraid of a golf club.

So is there a club in your bag you fear.

    What do you do.
    Ignore
    Remove
    Live in hope
    Practice it
    Buy something new

About 3/4 years ago myself and the driver had a bit of a rocky relationship for a couple of years. Eventually I had to say "its not me, its you" and we went our separate ways. After that I needed to have a few meaningless relationships with many others, will probably settle down with SLDR this season.:)

6 iron. Been in the shed since 2008. Wouldn't even keep it next to my bed for security as I'd probably miss the burglar with it :pac:

At times my 52 wedge scares the schmit out of me... Can be best club in bag but also the club I'm more likely to shank. Likely to pull it left when I think of the dreaded's but I still refuse to remove it from the bag... Lol

Who would have imagined a harmless 6 iron.

    Lol. Goes to show.

5 iron. Just don't tend to use it a lot so when I need it I'm not at all comfortable with it

Had a similar issue with my 6 iron in my old set. The actual reason was that a wooden tee broke in the top of it & every time I swing the club it would rattle up & down the club. Don't know why I didn't just get it regripped?

Have a bit of a love hate with my 60 degree wedge at the mo, not sure why.it's probably surplus to requirements & I don't bring it out with me every time I play

It's the 3-wood and 5-wood for me. I have never been comfortable playing woods off the turf, ever. Never ceases to amaze me to see almost every senior member I ever play with, hitting them so effortlessly. Give me a 4-iron any day....

Depending on the day, it could be any one of 14.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,730 ✭✭✭dan_ep82

    5i,4i and 3i

Since the change in swing etc I can't seem to hit the 4 and 5, never felt I needed the 3 unless it was off the T in high wind.

Any wedge from 50 yards in. Used to be my best shot, now, just scares the bejaybus out of me.

At the moment Its the driver for me , can end up anywhere from a 30 yard hook to a 200 yard slice or very rearly it find the middle of the fairway ðŸ˜႒

Putter for me. 2 foot or 50 foot anything can happen but put it in the hole.

Putter, The F@#kin putter. Every 6 months my stroke deserts me. I know the cause but cannot prevent it.

Me too. And its usually the second shot of the round as our first hole is a short par 4, index 18. Cue bladed shot oob. Have run up an 11 on that hole sometimes.

Actually no, there isn't for me. Plenty of shots I fear though. All of them are sub 50yds.

    5 wood-can't use it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 971 ✭✭✭Senecio

It used to be the 3-wood for me until I found the Callaway Diablo Edge Tour I have now.

Now it's the hybrid. I just can't find one that doesn't go left on me. I know it's my swing but the design of hybrids just seems to exacerbate it.

Must of tried about 15 hybrids to stop them hooking !!!

I tried a fancy lob wedge for a short while but couldnt trust it / my use of it. Went back to my pw and occasionally use a sw where I suppose a lob wedge would be handy if I could use it.

If you cant trust it take it out of the bag. I did just that and put back in the left handed pw for emergency situations instead. (I used it only yesterday).

Maybe at some point in the future I'll go back to the lob wedge and put some serious practice into it so I can decide whether it will aid my game or not.

I'm with you there Andy. I've interchanged a hybrid, a 3 wood and a 5 wood in my bag and I hate them all. Hit whichever one I'm carrying, watch it blaze left or right (or scuff 10 yards) and then curse myself for playing the club in the first place. No trust whatsoever.

Never carried any of the above clubs until a team partner told me I 'had' to have one in the bag. Well, it's there in the bag now, but it never gets used. After the Driver the next club down is a three iron.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48,742 ✭✭✭✭Wichita Lineman

In my round yesterday I used - driver, hybrid (about 4 wood), 5,6,7,8,9 irons, pw, left handed pw and putter that means I didnt use 3 or 4 iron nor my 3 wood but I could happily use them if I had needed to. Oh and of course it was a very rare round that I had no call to use my sw as I unusually steered clear of all bunkers.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,480 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Low irons, I dropped a 3 years ago, then only had a 4 for those "low under tree branches back onto the fairway" shots, then dropped my 5 as I only used it from the tee and replaced all with hybrids.
Only have four irons now, 6 which I use rarely,7 which I use a bit, then 8/9 of which I use the 9 quite a bit and the 8 quite rarely now I think about it.

6 iron for me.Just developed a mental block to it for no good reason, both 5 and 7 iron no woes at all apart from the usual.
Put a different colour grip on it for a month until it started playing ok again. Have it back as part of the set grip-wise now and she's behaving well again. That learnt not just my 6 iron but pretty sure the other clubs saw what happened too....

Used to be my 3 iron, but i just manned up, got over it and now its one of my favourites.

quite lucky at the moment that i like all my clubs :)

Am getting on with most of my clubs lately with my hybrid being the only hit and miss but am working on this at the range.
I dont have a club, but a shot that I dread and thats the one <20m to the green. Ruined many a fantastic drive with a shocking second shot!!

Charlie - I suffered from this for a while - you may have seen it :o

What I ended up doing as a patch is do a chip and run with a 9 iron back in stance more weight on left foot , takes a bit to get use to run out - but a go to pressure shot, it can't go that wrong.

Used to be my 6 iron too, was never great from 4-6 but 6 was the real stickler... I think it was to do with it being so close (obviously) to the 7, which I loved to hit.
I grew frustrated that there was such a difference in the striking of each considering the minimal difference is lenght, loft etc, the frustration grew and grew and became a mental block...
I could handle the 4 and 5 as I knew they were "harder" clubs to hit, if you get me.

Have gotten out of that lately, don't really have a club I hate now (plenty that I don't hit that well)

I was up at the range last week and couldn't believe how well I was striking the 6 iron but I realised I was struggling for distance with it after 4 or 5 shots.... turns out it was the 9i........... :o
Relieved and embarrassed at the same time

Was using a 7 iron for chip and runs (with some great results last year) but when you are on a downslope and the green is above your feet I'm snookered!!

Played the K Club at Christmas and had this exact shot - bombed a drive to within 30m of one of the par 4's and ended up on a downslope with the green above my feet.......fluffed my chip into the green leaving it miles short and just on the fringe. If it was singles it was a definite bogey. Shots like this cost me every round.

How about playing a club off the tee that leaves you a more preferred distance? No point bombing it down to a distance you won't like, or selecting a club if hit well that will leave you a club you dont like.

I hate short distances that are not full shots, so I play to leave myself full wedge/SW/LW, all of which I like. The hard part is in foursomes telling your partner to hit 5 iron and not 3 wood on the second shot of a par 5!

good advice that, favourite club in the bag is a 51degree wedge and hitting it 100m. Going to try this sunday and see how i get on.

I played with a good amateur once, a long time back, he liked hitting his 8 iron from 140. We were playing a parkland course with par 4s of quite varying length. He must have hit 5 or 6 different clubs off the tees of the par 4s, all to leave him with that shot. It was really impressive, made it look so easy.

Great post - that is what makes me a dumb golfer :o - no improving all the time at that,

Hit plenty of 7 irons and 6 irons off tees last year - would never have done that even 2 years ago.

    Great post,
Its really all down to how each individual Golfer and what distance suits them,
I think alot if not all of us Golfers starting off think : oh Par 4 Par 5 out with the Big stick or 3w when really 3 good clean iron shots would be better
