Noise from engine

Hi guys. I have a 06 petrol avensis which has developed a 'throaty ' sound from the engine
It's sounds exactly like there's a small hole in the exhaust.
It's noticeable about 70 kph and gets louder as you accelerate.
But not there when you just rev the engine in neutral
Also stops when I take off my foot off the accelerator
So I think that rules out exhaust or wheel bearing etc
    Coolant and oil fine
    No warning lights.
    Any ideas?

I would think if it sounds like the exhaust it most probably is. It could be a loose baffle in the back box.

Taking your foot off the accelerator doesn't rule out the exhaust, the revs will drop off so the noise will go away. Sounds like the exhaust to me.

Yes, but there is no noise when I rev it in neutral. I Revved it up to 3000 rpm and no noise

The engine isn't under load when free revving it so you may not notice it until your driving. If it sounds like an exhaust blowing then it more than likely is.

Have you inspected the air hoses in the engine? If they dry out and crack they can cause a throaty noise by sucking air in through the hole. You should still hear it in neutral though.

Thanks for all the replies. I will check the exhaust and hoses tomorrow

Strangely I have an 04 avensis and the last few days a sound like you describe is coming from it,let us know if you find anything.

It could be anything, but in my case it was a lose screw under the glovebox, such a simple thing. I could of sworn it was coming from the engine.

Took it to my mechanic today.

Turns out it is a bearing in the gearbox.
