What off-piste is deemed safe by resort?

The insurance policy booklet for ski travel insurance we're buying has cover for on-piste skiing, and off-piste "in areas designated safe by resort management".

Anyone have any idea how one finds out what areas are "designated safe by resort management"?

Few years since I've been skiing but as I remember in one of the resorts the ski map had a area marked as being off-piste. So it wasn't a dressed run but it was kind of in between some and I think was deemed to be safe enough even though not marked or dressed or groomed or that. I'm sure someone else will eb able to give better answer but thats my reckoning

Thanks! I'll keep an eye out for those maps... I usually just look at the piste routes, so may not have noticed any signage for off-piste on the large maps.

I think I have the same policy as I remember reading it and thinking it was way too generous, I'm actually covered in off piste areas provided they aren't deemed dangerous by the resort but I can still ski those provided I'm with a guide??

What policy is that guys- sounds great! Are you sure it's not too good to be true??!

I have VHI which covers me to ski off-piste as long as I'm 1) with a guide and 2) not skiing against local authoritative warning or advice, but I'd happily pay a little extra for a policy with off-piste cover like that....

This is piste map of Whistler should give you an idea, there is the ski area boundary, off piste is anywhere within those confines and the permanently closed areas are off limits.

I think it's vhi multi trip or something, maybe with extra winter sports cover but it sounds like the wording you quoted. Maybe I'm misreading it. If get a chance i'll look again.

We're getting the getcover.ie single-trip insurance with cover for winter sports. It's 35 Euro for 1 week for 2.
I think it's good value. I did have a look into VHI multi-trip but the limits on it are waaay lower than getcover, so decided against it. I only take a couple of trips a year anyway so don't mind paying for separate insurance with higher limits/cover for those trips.

Ah ok, thanks a148pro & Gatica!

Yeah the multi-trip is €49 for the year, which works for me because I travel a lot, so trip by trip would cost a fortune! I'll look into getcover though, they might have an annual policy worth getting.

VHI is generally fine for me- the OH is a guide, so if I'm far off-piste or skiing/touring out of resort he's generally with me (or someone similarly qualified is). If I'm off-piste on my own I try to make sure I'm within crawling distance of a piste, lol ;-)

Hopefully it's insurance I'll never use, but I like the reassurance of knowing it's there. The EH1C is great for general GP care, worth having too.

Also, I looked into the extra winter sports cover, but I didn't feel it offered me any extras worth having- the Multi-Trip basic is actually very comprehensive from a healthcare perspective. I'm not too bothered about flight cover, resort closures etc. Don't think the lift pass cover applies to season tickets either, so it seems to be mainly for holiday issues rather than injury cover...
