Shipping, fan pandering....is it killing tv?

In recent seasons of tv, and especially those that encourage social media....one sees alot of shows now engaging in pandering or fan wankery.

What this means is producers/writers are actively watching what fans are saying and make adjustments to scripts of story arcs based on what they think is popular/wanted by the fans.

If you've watched the 100th episode of The Vampire Diaries you'll see a certain coupling that was the stuff of fan faction, Tumblr, and fan "shipping'".

TVD is one of many shows out there right now that do it, its more a network symptom...but cable shows have been guilty of it also.

You have to respect showrunners from say Game Of Thrones who have said many times they dont write for the fans and actively piss them off by leaving book stuff out....they make the show they want to make.

While in some respects you want a show to engage with fans, whip up publicity etc. - even creating "shipper wars" is great PR.

But i think you have to be careful not to let fans dictate the script.

    What do you think?

Of course we can't dictate the script.
If we did, sh*te like "Amber" would never see the light of day.
No, us fans have only one function, and that is to pay 160 euro every year for a license.

I think it depends on the show. The less mainstream, yet successful (Supernatural, for example) ones know they can throw in a certain amount of fan service and it'll go down well and won't piss off the core audience. But yeah, I've always thought that showrunners shouldn't care one bit about what the internetz thinks in terms of plot changes or developments, be it hatred for The Killing, or whatever.

I do dislike it when they throw in a hashtag somewhere on the screen, thankfully I don't really watch shows that seem to, but I'd guess that's done by the network and not the creators.

Some shows will make their money long after production from being sold abroad and from boxsets and the like. Others make money by being part of the zeitgeist while airing. They have their place.

Some do it well - Community.
Others ruin the show - Sherlock.
