Ticking after I start engine - '05 Lancer

    Afternoon all,

    Car; '05 Lancer
    Mileage; 100k miles
Ownership; Bought in Feb '11 and have put 28k untroubled miles on it.

Very well minded car when I bought it. I have serviced it fairly regularly since. I never let it go over 8k miles between services.
T/B was done at 51k (before my ownership)
I'm planning on doing it again at the next service (104k miles)

In the last week or so I have noticed a ticking sound when I start it in the morning. It's noticeable enough for me to be posting here about it.!

It goes away (or I forget about it) after a few minutes.

Is this something I should be overly concerned about??
    Thanks a mill

IIRC those have hydraulic tappets. A little rattling on cold-start isn't the end of the world, but it should disappear quickly as they oil up. They're probably wearing a little. Keep the oil fresh, the correct grade, and the correct level.

    When did you last:
    Check oil level?
    Change oil (and filter)?

Checked oil today at lunchtime. Level looks fine.
Changed oil & filter in November at approx 97.5k miles.

    Fair play thanks.
Should I get the tappets changed at the next service?
I will be getting the belt done then also.

Not necessarily. Ask the mechanic to cock an ear to the valvetrain and see what he makes of it.

What grade oil is it? A full synthetic would be no harm either, if not used already.

Some Mitsubishis develop that tick as they get older. The galant used to do it as well.

The gdi tick? Oh man couldn't live with that, drove a really ticky (nasty diesel engine noise) s40 once. Driving in enclosed spaces sounded like a strafing run.

Pretty sure it's fully synthetic. I must confirm that with the chap who works on the car.

Most 4g Mitsu engines develop noisy tappets, to properly clean them belts, camshafts have to be removed. Noise usually comes back even after cleaning, but sometimes they keep going silent for a good while. Aftermarket bigger lash adjusters also available, they dont need cleaning afaik.
